Resident Evil : Afterlife Officially Announced

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
September 29, 2009

Screen Gems and Constantin Film have officially announced that production has begun on Resident Evil: Afterlife in Toronto, Canada.

ShockTillYouDrop.com was the first to break the news about the fourth announcement back in July (here).

Actress Milla Jovovich returns as the zombie-fighting heroine Alice. Ali Larter and Spencer Locke will reprise their roles from Resident Evil: Extinction as Claire Redfield and K-Mart, respectively. New to the film franchise is leading man Wentworth Miller, who has signed on as Chris Redfield – Claire's brother and a popular character from the game series.

Shawn Roberts will take over the role of Alice's nemesis Wesker. Boris Kodjoe and Kim Coates have also been cast.

Paul W.S. Anderson is returning to the director's chair with a script he penned. He'll be shooting this entry in 3-D.

Anderson offered a small glimpse of what can be expected in the new film: "Alice's battle with The Umbrella Corporation isn't finished," he says. "Last time we saw Alice, she let them know she was coming after them. It’s time to settle the score."

Resident Evil: Afterlife is due in theaters around the fall of 2010.

Venom Movie Moving Forward?

Source:SCI FI Wire
September 26, 2009

SCI FI Wire got a chance to talk to Zombieland co-writer Paul Wernick about the script for "Spider-Man" spin-off Venom that he wrote with Rhett Reese.

"We've written two drafts of Venom, and the studio has it, and they're pushing forward in whatever ways they push forward," Wernick said. He was tight-lipped about whether there was a relationship between Spider-Man 4 and the Venom project.

"We can't really talk about that, unfortunately," he added. "Basically, the studio and Marvel and the Arads are taking our drafts and going beyond and figuring out what's the next step."

Terminator Rights May Hit the Auction Block

September 28, 2009

The Los Angeles Times has a lengthy and extensive report on the status of Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek's Halcyon Holdings, who bought the rights to the "Terminator" franchise for $25 million in 2007 in order to produce this summer's Terminator Salvation, but who have now hired the financial advisory firm FTI Capital Advisors to look into their options, having filed for bankruptcy. The thought is that the sale of the rights to the franchise could help make the production company solvent again.

For much of the earlier part of the year, there was a lot of talk about there being a Terminator 5, mostly coming from McG, but the poor reaction and box office showing of "Salvation," at least domestically didn't seem to warrant another installment.

The Los Angeles Times report, which you can read here gets further into the history of the franchise, how the rights have changed hands over the 25 years since James Cameron's original movie, as well as some of the debts owed by Halcyon and the various lawsuits surrounding their bankruptcy.

Is Danny Trejo in Predators?

September 28, 2009

The guys from the Punch Drunk Critics blog were at Horrorfind Weekend in Hunt Valley, Maryland this weekend, and they got a few minutes with actor Danny Trejo to try their best to get any new information out of him in regards to his next movie Machete. For whatever reason, they asked him about Sin City 2 and basically got a stock answer before Trejo revealed that "we're doing Predators next," which makes one assume Trejo will be appearing in Robert Rodriguz's Predators, the Rodriguez-produced relaunch to be directed by Nimrod Antal (Vacancy).

Of course, this is not anything too groundbreaking since Trejo has appeared in just about every movie Rodriguez has been involved with going back to El Mariachi, but it does confirm that they're moving forward with the casting on the movie and possibly already have Trejo's ubiquitous role sussed out.

You can watch their video interview below and decide for yourself:

Roman Polanski Arrested in Switzerland

September 27, 2009

According to Swiss police, Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski is being held in custody on a 31-year-old arrest warrant for fleeing the United States in 1977 after pleading guilty for having sex with a 13-year-old girl. Polanski, who has lived in France since running from the trial, was en route to the Zurich Film Festival where he was to receive a tribute for his filmmaking career.

It's somewhat surprising to think that Switzerland might honor a U.S. arrest warrant that's over thirty years old, but currently, Polanski is in "provisional detention" until they determine whether he should be extradited to the United States to face the charges against him. This means that Polanski will have to be put through the Swiss court of justice and will probably try to appeal against any extradition decision.

UPDATE: The Los Angeles Times is reporting that the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office were aware that Polanski would be leaving France for the Zurich Film Festival and they planned on issuing a provisional arrest warrant to the U.S. Justice department to have Polanski detained in Switzerland.

Polanski's original 1977 case was well-documented in Marina Zenovich's 2008 film Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired, which included an interview with Polanski's victim Samantha Geimer, who has since gone on the record that the case against Polanski should be thrown out after suing and accepting a settlement.

September 26, 2009

ShockTillYouDrop.com reports that Danielle Harris (Halloween II) has been cast as Barbara in the 3D CGI pic Night of the Living Dead: Origins.

The film, to be directed by newcomer Zebediah de Soto and produced by Simon West and Simon West Productions president Jib Polhemus, will be an origin story without the involvement of George A. Romero.

De Soto, who wrote the script with David R. Schwartz, wants to update the tale partially by bringing out the characters' backstories and make what he called "an American-style anime."

The Hobbit and James Bond 23 in Trouble?

September 25, 2009

Deadline Hollywood is reporting that MGM is needing $20M in short-term cash flow to cover overhead, and an additional $150 million to get through the end of year to stay out of bankruptcy and possibly losing such franchise films as The Hobbit (and its sequel) and James Bond 23. Here's an excerpt from the article:

So the bondhholders said to MGM, in essence, that they were going to let the studio go bankrupt and collect their money since they'd be first in line to get paid. But Cooper explained that this would be the worst possible outcome for the creditors and the company. Because if MGM were forced into bankruptcy, then it would lose James Bond and the studio doesn't think it can stay alive without 007. Also, a lot of other issues would surface that would tremendously hurt MGM.

Also, if MGM goes through bankruptcy, that's a very expensive prospect (where only the lawyers get rich), and extremely disruptive (since who would do business with MGM in the interim) and won’t get the creditors what they want which is their money back. It's more than simply MGM losing Bond. The studio could lose a lot of other franchises.

Do you think the creditors will save the day for MGM, or do you think they'll let the studio go into bankruptcy and risk losing such franchises?

Source:MTV
September 23, 2009

MTV talked to Geoffrey Rush who says he's ready to reprise his role of Barbossa in Spring 2010 for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. The fourth installment is scheduled to be released in Summer 2011.

He said: "They're waiting for the screenplay writers to put together something that's beyond the trilogy, take it off into a new direction so that it's fresh and hopefully really interesting for an audience, that they're not going to just sausage-machine out something else, which wouldn't be so good."

More Resident Evil: Afterlife Casting, Story Info

September 22, 2009

Surrogates actor Boris Kodjoe has spilled more beans about Resident Evil: Afterlife after announcing last week on his Twitter account that he is part of the cast.

Jack Kirby Estate Goes After Marvel and Studios

Source:Bleeding Cool, The New York Times
September 21, 2009

Bleeding Cool reports that the estate of Jack Kirby, co-creator of Captain America, The Fantastic Four, X-Men, The Avengers, Iron Man, Hulk, The Silver Surfer and Thor has sent notices terminating copyright to publishers Marvel and Disney, as well as Sony, Universal, 20th Century Fox and Paramount Pictures, which have made movies and TV shows based on characters he created or co-created:

Just as the Jerry Siegel estate has done so with rights to Superman, so Kirby’s estate is looking to regain his share of copyright in the characters and their use in comics and other media. the estate is using the same lawyers as the Siegels, Toberoff & Associates, who have been fairly successful in their case against DC/Warner so far.

Such claims, if found valid, would begin from 2014 and, as always, its worth noting that Marvel/Disney will still own the trademarks of the characters in comics, and the studios in movies. The likelihood is that, if successful, the Kirby estate would enter into negotiation with Marvel over terms to continue publishing comics based on his work.

You can read more on this here. The New York Times also had more on the matter:

Heirs to the comic book artist Jack Kirby, a creator of characters and stories behind Marvel mainstays like “X-Men” and “Fantastic Four,” last week sent 45 notices of copyright termination to Marvel and Disney, as well as Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures, 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, and other companies that have been using the characters.

The notices expressed an intent to regain copyrights to some of Mr. Kirby’s creations as early as 2014, according to a statement disclosed on Sunday by Toberoff & Associates, a law firm in Los Angeles that helped win a court ruling last year returning a share of the copyright in Superman to heirs of one of the character’s creators, Jerome Siegel.

Disney said in a statement, “the notices involved are an attempt to terminate rights 7 to 10 years from now, and involve claims that were fully considered in the acquisition.”
