Christian Bale on the Third Batman Movie

Source: Chris
April 28, 2009

Total Film talked to Christian Bale about the follow-up to The Dark Knight. Here's an excerpt:

"Will we do a third movie? It's got to be the right story. You can't make something like 'The Dark Knight' and then come out with something disappointing.

"I would like it if people say, 'You'll never make a good third movie.' I say, 'OK, let's make a third movie in that case, let's prove them wrong. But that's just me. The fact is, I have to! I've signed up! Chris doesn't. So I'm in a bit of a fix if he says he doesn't want to!"

For more quotes, go here. Before he can start on a third movie, director Chris Nolan is first making the sci-fi action film Inception for Warner Bros.

Principal Photography Begins on Clash of the Titans

Source: Warner Bros. Pictures
April 27, 2009

Principal photography began Monday on Warner Bros. Pictures and Legendary Pictures' epic action adventure Clash of the Titans, being directed by Louis Leterrier (The Incredible Hulk). The film stars Sam Worthington (upcoming Terminator Salvation and Avatar) and Academy Award® nominees Liam Neeson (Taken, Schindler's List) and Ralph Fiennes (the "Harry Potter" films, The English Patient).

In Clash of the Titans, the ultimate struggle for power pits men against kings and kings against gods. But the war between the gods themselves could destroy the world. Born of a god but raised as a man, Perseus (Worthington) is helpless to save his family from Hades (Fiennes), vengeful god of the underworld. With nothing left to lose, Perseus volunteers to lead a dangerous mission to defeat Hades before he can seize power from Zeus (Neeson) and unleash hell on earth. Leading a daring band of warriors, Perseus sets off on a perilous journey deep into forbidden worlds. Battling unholy demons and fearsome beasts, he will only survive if he can accept his power as a god, defy his fate and create his own destiny.

Leading the international cast is Australian actor Sam Worthington as Perseus, the mortal son of Zeus, king of the gods. Liam Neeson takes on the role of the mighty Zeus, and Ralph Fiennes plays the role of Hades, god of the underworld, who feeds on human fear. Rounding out the cast is Gemma Arterton (Quantum of Solace) as Io, Perseus' mysterious spiritual guide throughout his journey; Mads Mikkelsen (Casino Royale) as Draco, who takes up his sword to join Perseus' quest; Jason Flemyng (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) as Acrisius, a one-time king-turned-hideous beast; and Alexa Davalos (Defiance) as Andromeda, a princess doomed to lose her life if Perseus does not succeed.

Based on the 1981 film of the same name, written by the late Beverley Cross, Clash of the Titans is directed by Louis Leterrier from a screenplay by Phil Hay & Matt Manfredi (Aeon Flux), story by Travis Beacham (Dog Days of Summer) and Hay & Manfredi. The film is produced by Basil Iwanyk, who produced the drama We Are Marshall for Warner Bros. Pictures, and Kevin De La Noy, who last served as an executive producer on the studio's blockbuster The Dark Knight. The executive producers are Academy Award® winner Richard D. Zanuck (Driving Miss Daisy), who most recently collaborated with Warner Bros. on the comedy hit Yes Man, and Legendary Pictures' Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and William Fay, who have teamed with the studio on such hits as The Dark Knight and 300.

The behind-the-scenes team creating this mythical spectacle includes director of photography Peter Menzies, Jr. (The Incredible Hulk); production designer Martin Laing (Terminator Salvation); editor Vincent Tabaillon (The Incredible Hulk); Academy Award®-winning costume designer Lindy Hemming (Topsy-Turvy, The Dark Knight); Oscar®-nominated visual effects supervisor Nick Davis (The Dark Knight); Oscar®-nominated prosthetics supervisor Conor O'Sullivan (The Dark Knight, Saving Private Ryan); Academy Award®-winning special effects and animatronics supervisor Neil Corbould (Gladiator); and Academy Award®-winning makeup and hair designer Jenny Shircore (Elizabeth).

Clash of the Titans will begin filming in studios outside London and will later shoot in various locations in Wales and in the Spanish Canary Islands, predominantly on Tenerife, off the coast of Africa. Further aerial work is set to take place in the diverse locales of Ethiopia and Iceland.

Verbinski's Bioshock Temporarily Halted

Source: Variety.com
April 24, 2009

Less than a month after the announcement that director Gore Verbinski was passing on helming a fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film to move forward on directing a live action movie based on Take-Two Interactive's video game Bioshock, Variety reports that Universal Pictures has put the brakes on the film in the middle of pre-production.

Unlike what happened to the Universal and 20th Century Fox adaptation of Microsoft's Halo a few years back, everyone involved says they're still determined to make the movie, despite Universal getting cold feet when the cost to make the film rose to $160 million (A similar thing happened with Ridley Scott's Robin Hood before they reworked the script to do it for less money.) Verbinski and his production team will be evaluating whether they can make the movie outside the country to take advantage of tax credits.

You can read the entire story at Variety.

20th Century Fox has already set a July 7, 2010 release date for Robert Rodriguez's Predators, which the studio promises to be "a bold new chapter in the Predator universe."

Rodriguez officially announced the project just yesterday, calling the project "a reboot of the 'Predator' series." Rodriguez previously wrote a Predator 3 that was then discarded because it was "too big."

As far as competition, Paramount has The Last Airbender scheduled for a July 2, 2010 release and Universal Pictures is eyeing July 9, 2010 for Despicable Me.

TRANSFORMERS 2: NEW LINKIN PARK SONG AND SCORE

April 24, 2009

REAKING NEWS: Linkin Park will be working on the score for Transformers 2: Revenge Of The Fallen.

Although I wasn't at liberty to say it before, the song I've been referencing here on mikeshinoda.com in the past few weeks...is actually being done for Michael Bay's new Transformers film, due out June 24th.

In addition--and probably ever cooler--we have been offered the unique opportunity to help score the film. The song we wrote is being used as one of the themes, and we will be writing various interpolations on that theme, and trying out some other thematic ideas as part of the (very large) team scoring the film.

My bandmates and I are working with award-winning film composer (and resident ass-kicker) Hans Zimmer. We met with Hans last week, and heard some of the incredible things he and his guys have done with our new song. In the next few days, we'll be doing some work with Hans' amazing writing and recording crew.

Michael Bay has shown us select scenes from the film, and it looks incredible. I can't wait for you to see it.

So Long, GeoCities: We Forgot You Still Existed

JR Raphael, PC World

Apr 23, 2009 5:41 pm

So Long, GeoCities: We Forgot You Still ExistedGeoCities, a free Web hosting service that achieved fame in the mid-90s, died Thursday at the Yahoo headquarters in Silicon Valley. GeoCities was 15 years old.

GeoCities had suffered a long and drawn-out battle with its health over the past decade. An antiquated service model and outdated technology are widely blamed for the struggle. An official cause of death, however, has yet to be determined.

GeoCities: 1995 - 2009

GeoCities was born as "Beverly Hills Internet" in the winter of 1995. Its parents, David Bohnett and John Rezner, wanted to create a virtual community that mimicked the real world, with pages hosted in "cyber cities" and other similarly nauseating concepts.

Both teenagers and first-generation Internet dorks (known then as "former SysOps") flocked to the service, setting up personal pages in the "cyber cities" of their choice. Despite GeoCities' built-in watermarks and on-page advertisements, the site's popularity continued to climb, and the shame its users should have felt for creating abhorrent content within its servers continued to remain repressed (see: "A1PYRO'S WORLD").

The 'Portal Page' Era

As GeoCities matured, it decided to spread its wings and leap into the then-blossoming business of "portal pages," joining such companies as Excite, Lycos, AltaVista, and HotBot (all of which are now listed as being on life support at a San Francisco-area assisted living facility). Standing proud, GeoCities reorganized itself with even more "cyber neighborhoods" that featured news, chat rooms, and polls in which users could express their opinions via multiple-choice forms.

Perhaps most notably, shortly before its third birthday, GeoCities expanded its storage offering from 6MB to an almost-doubled 11MB -- nearly eight entire floppy disks worth of data.

GeoCities' Later Years

One year later, in 1999, GeoCities underwent its largest transformation when the yet-to-become-a-punchline company Yahoo purchased it for $4.7 billion. Yahoo removed many of GeoCities' trademark assets, including the "cyber city" foundation of the service, and attempted to transform GeoCities into a profit-producing venture.

It was around this time that GeoCities began showing the first symptoms of the medical issues that would plague it for the remainder of its life. GeoCities grew weaker by the month. The proliferation of low-cost hosting options, combined with the increasing popularity of social network-style services in place of personal home pages, only contributed to its demise.

GeoCities is survived by two cousins, Angelfire and Tripod, along with an uncle, Jeeves. All three are believed to be terminally ill.

Of the 12 remaining GeoCities users, only one was available for comment. "Holy crap!" said the user, a red-faced fellow named Strong Bad. "The scroll buttons and animated GIFs on that site were unbeatable."

The GeoCities site is expected to remain functional through midyear as a tribute to its life. Funeral arrangements are now pending.

Global economic crisis hits German sex industry

Global economic crisis hits German sex industry

It's no secret that nearly every profession around the globe is feeling the effects of the economic crisis -- even prostitution. In Germany, where the world's oldest profession is legal, prostitutes have created their own version of a stimulus package. Brothels, like the GeizHaus in Hamburg, above, are offering, among other things, discounts to help lure back customers.
BERLIN: It did not take long for the world financial crisis to affect the world's oldest profession in

Germany.

In one of the few countries where prostitution is legal, and unusually transparent, the industry has responded with an economic stimulus package of its own: modern marketing tools, rebates and gimmicks to boost falling demand.

Some brothels have cut prices or added free promotions while others have introduced all-inclusive flat-rate fees. Free shuttle buses, discounts for seniors and taxi drivers, as well as "day passes" are among marketing strategies designed to keep business going.

"Times are tough for us too," said Karin Ahrens, who manages the "Yes, Sir" brothel in Hanover. She told Reuters revenue had dropped by 30 percent at her establishment while turnover had fallen by as much as 50 percent at other clubs.

"We're definitely feeling the crisis. Clients are being tight with their money. They're afraid. You can't charge for the extras any more and there is pressure to cut prices. Everyone wants a deal. Special promotions are essential these days."

Germany has about 400,000 professional prostitutes. Official figures do not distinguish between the sexes and the number of male prostitutes is not known, but they account for a small fraction of the total and are treated the same under the law.

In 2002, new legislation allowed prostitutes to advertise and to enter into formal labor contracts. It opened the way for them to obtain health insurance, previously refused if they listed their true profession.

Annual revenues are about 14 billion euros ($18 billion), according to an estimate by the Verdi services union. Taxes on prostitution are an important source of income for some cities.

Prostitution is also legal and regulated in the Netherlands, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Greece, Turkey and in some parts of Australia, and the U.S. state of Nevada.

In other countries, such as Luxembourg, Latvia, Denmark, Belgium and Finland, it is legal but brothels and pimping are not.

"CREATIVE SOLUTIONS"

Berlin's "Pussy Club" has attracted media attention with its headline-grabbing "flat rate", a 70-euro admission charge for unlimited food, drink and sex between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

"You've got to come up with creative solutions these days," said club manager Stefan, who requested his surname not be published. "We're feeling the economic crisis, too, even though business has fortunately been more or less okay for us so far. "Our offer might sound like it's too good to be true, but it's real. You can eat as much as you want, drink as much as you want and have as much sex as you want."

Stefan, who runs other establishments in Heidelberg and Wuppertal besides the Berlin club, said the flat rate had helped keep the 30 women working in each location fully employed.

Other novel ideas used by brothels and prostitutes include loyalty cards, group sex parties and rebates for golf players. Hamburg's "GeizHaus" is especially proud of its discount 38.50 euro price. The city has Germany's most famous red-light district, the Reeperbahn, in the notorious St. Pauli district.

Anke Christiansen, manager of the "GeizHaus," said the effects of the economic crisis were clear. "The regular customers who used to come by two or three times a week are only coming by once or twice a week now." A "GeizHaus" client, who gave his name as Pascal, said: "Naturally we're all feeling the effects of the crisis." He added that he could no longer afford his usual two or three visits a week.

Guenter Krull, manager of the "FKK Villa" in Hanover, concurred. "The girls are complaining, too, because business is bad and I worry that it's all going to get even worse.

CONTINGENCY PLANS

Ecki Krumeich, manager of upmarket Artemis Club in Berlin, said he resisted pressure to cut prices, although senior citizens and taxi drivers get a 50-percent discount on the 80-euro admission fee on Sundays and Mondays.

"Naturally, we're keeping an eye on the overall economic situation and making contingency plans," said Krumeich, who said his "wellness club" is one of the largest in Europe with about 70 prostitutes.

"Our philosophy is: we provide an important service and even in a recession there are some things people won't do without. Other downmarket places might cut prices but we decided we won't do that. In fact, we raised prices by 10 euros in January."

Stephanie Klee, a prostitute in Berlin and former leader of the German association of sex workers, said even if a few luxury brothels were weathering the storm because of their wealthy regular clientele, many were struggling.

"Just about everyone's turning to advertising in one form or another," she said. "If the consumer electronics shop and the optician come out with rebates and special promotions, why shouldn't we try the same thing?" While she and her colleagues might have had five or six clients per day a year ago that had fallen to one or even none.

Klee worries, however, that the crisis has led to "price dumping" in some cities, fees have fallen as low as 30 euros in some parts of Berlin and elsewhere, she said. "You'll find a lot of customers trying to negotiate prices down now," said Klee. "A 30-year-old came up to me and said 'I lost my job so will you give me a discount?'."

She and others said they were alarmed that amateur prostitutes, mostly women with low-paid careers, were increasingly turning to prostitution to make ends meet.

"More and more women are moonlighting on the weekends," said Ahrens. "They're not able to get by with their main job and are in pretty dire straights. For some it works out okay but it's tough for some others and they often don't stay very long.

Fox, Rodriguez Rebooting Predator Series

Source: IESB
April 23, 2009

Robert Rodriguez and 20th Century Fox are giving Predator a facelift in a new film entitled Predators. First reported by Bloody-Disgusting in January, the official announcement came today via a news conference today at the Texas-based Troublemaker Studios where Rodriguez was on hand for the signing of a new state film incentive.

"I'm going to be able to shoot my upcoming 'Machete' here, a sci-fi action film called 'Nerverackers,' a re-boot of the 'Predator' series called 'Predators,' and a couple of smaller movies called 'Sin City 2' and 'The Jetsons,'" he told the press.

If you recall, Rodriguez penned a Predator 3 script some time ago that was discarded because it was "too big."

New Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie Coming!

Source: The Mirage Group
April 23, 2009

The Mirage Group has given the green light for development of a live-action major motion picture focusing on the origins of the iconic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, targeted for release in 2011.

Announcement of the latest (fifth) big screen version of the crime-fighting "heroes in a half-shell" comes on the day the Turtles kick off their 25th anniversary national "Shell-ebration" in New York City with multiple events that include the honor of lighting the Empire State Building in 'turtle green' and a unique outdoor presentation of their beloved first Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film at the Tribeca Film Festival "Drive-In".

Mirage is partnering with producers Scott Mednick (300, Superman Returns, 10,000 BC, and the upcoming Where the Wild Things Are) and Galen Walker (who produced the most recent computer-animated TMNT theatrical release) to create this live-action film. Peter Laird, Gary Richardson, Frederick Fierst, Eric Crown and Napoleon Smith III will serve as executive producers of the film, which is based on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles characters created by Laird and Kevin Eastman. Mednick and Walker will serve as producers. The project is being funded through Lightbox Productions, LLC.

"It was critical to us to find people who both understood the Turtles franchise and were accomplished film makers who appreciated both the action and humor components of the Turtles' identity ," said Gary Richardson CEO, The Mirage Group. "With Galen and Scott we know we've found great talent with those essential attributes."

"The original dozen comics created by Peter Laird and Kevin Eastman are some of the best source material one could hope for," said Mednick. "We're excited to bring this story to a whole new generation of moviegoers as well as the legions of fans that have made the Turtles - Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael as well as Splinter, April O'Neil, Casey Jones and, of course, the great villain Shredder - a part of their world for 25 years."

Mednick has begun reaching out to writers and directors and is already in discussion with several high-profile actors interested in portraying Turtles characters they loved as kids.

4Kids Entertainment, master licensing agency for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles property, will be handling all the movie merchandise licensing.

The "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" made their public premiere in May 1984 in a comic book published and distributed by Mirage Studios. A hugely successful TV series quickly followed, along with a record-setting licensing program and three successful live-action theatrical films. In 2003, the Turtles were re-introduced to a new generation through a fresh TV series, a computer- animated theatrical movie and new merchandising program. The 25th year of "TMNT" will provide fans of all ages with the opportunity to experience this evergreen property in a ten-city mobile tour highlighted by the "TMNT" Party Bus, a rolling museum of "TMNT" memorabilia.

Spider-Man 4 in 3 Dimensions?

Source: Forbes
April 23, 2009

Forbes talked to Sony Pictures Entertainment's co-chairmen Amy Pascal and Michael Lynton and asked whether they were considering doing Spider-Man 4 in 3-D.

Pascal answered, "Could be," while Lynton added, "People are paying a premium to see movies in 3-D and that's a very big deal. It's never been done before that someone says you have to pay more to see Spider-Man than a romantic comedy."

2-D or 3-D, we'll be seeing Sam Raimi's fourth installment on May 6, 2011.

Dimension Lets Sin City 2 Rights Expire?

Dimension Lets Sin City 2 Rights Expire?

Source: IESB
April 22, 2009

IESB is reporting an interesting rumor saying that The Weinstein Company's Dimension Films has let the film rights for Sin City 2 expire:

The specifics are not clear but some details are emerging that the movie will now be financed by a private equity group and an announcement is expected soon.

Robert Rodriguez' Trouble Maker studios will still produce the film.

No word on what studio may end up distributing. Universal Studios' name has come up as a possible contender.

The first film, released in April of 2005, was both a critical and financial success. Made for about $40 million, the graphic novel adaptation earned $158.8 million worldwide.

UPDATE #1: MTV has debunked the above story from IESB with an official statement from The Weinstein Company attorney Bert Fields:

"TWC's rights to produce sequels to Sin City remain intact as they always have been. Any suggestion to the contrary is complete hogwash."

UPDATE #2: The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed that Hollywood producers have been shopped the rights by representatives for Frank Miller's estate, who they say are seeking a new place to set up a potential follow-up. The Weinstein Company, however, on Wednesday said it stood by its statement above.

Shuler Donner on Magneto, Constantine 2

Source: SCI FI Wire
April 22, 2009

SCI FI Wire talked to X-Men Origins: Wolverine producer Lauren Shuler Donner about the possible Magneto film and asked whether Constantine 2 was still in the cards.

About Magneto, she said: "I don't know. We have a great script. Honestly, we have all been just so focused on getting 'Wolverine' out that we didn't take the time to sit down and explore 'What are the movies we're going to do next within the genre?' We will do that. We will do that. We all want to. 'Magneto' is a fantastic script, and hopefully we'll make it. I don't know."

She added that Constantine 2 is looking "very good. Thinking about it. Looking for a writer."

Schwarzenegger Talks Terminator Salvation Cameo

April 21, 2009

The Los Angeles Times reports that Arnold Schwarzenegger discussed his possible cameo in Terminator Salvation during a webcast interview on Tuesday.

Schwarzenegger told blogger Bill Bradley that he had met with director McG and agreed to be in the movie as long as he didn't have to perform. "I made it very clear that I don't have the time to do the movie," he said. "I said that I would be willing to be in the movie if they get the technology together, and so they are working on that right now."

Spoiler alert! Schwarzenegger would be in a brief scene in which John Connor (Christian Bale) encounters him as a "future Terminator," the governor said, adding, "I think it's cool to continue on with the franchise... in case I want to jump over again and get into the acting after I'm through here."

Sam Raimi Talks Spider-Man 4

Source: SCI FI Wire
April 21, 2009

SCI FI Wire chatted with Spider-Man 4 director Sam Raimi, who said that he's meeting soon with Kirsten Dunst to talk about her reprising the role of Mary Jane Watson. "I think she would like to. But I don't want to speak on behalf of her," he said.

He was also asked if the recent darker and edgier superhero movies will influence the fourth installment. "I hope we don't react to these very good and sometimes bad superhero movies around us. I hope that we just [look] ever deeper into the truth of who Peter Parker really is—as a human being and the unique character, and that we celebrate that, which is a lot of the reason I want to make this next picture. I still believe I have an understanding of Peter Parker as the character that I have not quite put onto the screen yet," he said.

Millar Comments on Wanted 2 Screenwriter

Source: Mark Millar
April 21, 2009

Last week, it was announced that Evan Spiliotopoulos has been hired to write the script for Universal's Wanted 2, based on a story by Chris Morgan. There was some negative feedback as Spiliotopoulos is credited as co-writer of Pooh's Heffalump Movie and its DVD Halloween spin-off. But Mark Millar, creator of the graphic novel and producer on the sequel, says that's not why he was brought on board.

"Never listen to any commentators as they never know anything about who's coming back, etc. It's just speculation and 99% of the time these guys don't have access to the people who know. 'Wanted 2' is being made in a very tight circle at the moment," Millar said on his message board.

"As a producer on the thing, I'm excited. I know who's in it and after doing 342 million at the box office we have [serious] money to spend on everything from cast to crew to script."

About Spiliotopoulos, he added that "This guy is supposed to be really good. He did a GREAT action script recently (on an unproduced movie) and that's what got him this gig."

Timur Bekmambetov is again directing and James McAvoy is expected to return for the lead role.
