EA Shutting Down Old Sports Servers

Multiplayer to be shutdown for older titles.

January 4, 2010 - 2010 may have just started, but the online party will be ending soon for a number of last gen and current generation EA Sports titles. According to an Online Service Update on EA.Com, twenty-five sports titles will find their online service shut down by EA on or before February 2. The update stated, "You may continue to play the games online up until these dates, but certain community programs may begin to close down prior to the shutdown dates."

The update extended a thank you to fans of the older games, stating, "All of us at EA would like to thank you for your valued participation in our online gaming community and hope that your enthusiasm for these games extends to our current lineup and beyond." A number of the affected titles are older PS2 games, such as FIFA 07 and NASCAR 08.

However, some newer titles, such as Madden NFL 09, Facebreaker and NBA Street Homecourt for the Xbox 360 and PS3 were also included. No word was given as to how the shutdown would affect Xbox Live's or PSN's listing of downloadable roster updates for 360 or PS3 games. We have contacted Microsoft and Sony for word on the impending shutdown of EA servers, but did not receive any comment at the time of publish. The list of affected sports games is below.

Microsoft Retail Stores Opening Next to Apple Stores

Microsoft is planning to open its retail locations right next to or near Apple retail locations. Unlike the Apple Store, which serves as a direct point of sales with customers, Microsoft's strategy will be on product demonstration and educating customers. In addition, Microsoft will be sharing its strategy and what it learns from store operations with its partners in contrast to Apple's secret, yet lucrative, retail operations.
The education and product demonstration approach that Microsoft retail will embrace will be in line with its recent marketing campaigns--letting customers know about product features and directly comparing Microsoft products against Apple's higher-priced, but similar, offerings. Here, customers can just trot across the mall to an Apple store to price shop, and hopefully, if Microsoft plays it right, customers will be back to Redmond's products.
Although Microsoft executives claim that they won't be imitating Apple's sales strategies at retail locations, Microsoft is indeed copying Apple's choice of location. It has been said that Apple thoroughly researches retail locations based on traffic, amount of sales, visibility, and other factors before committing to a lease. By attaching itself to Apple locations, Microsoft spares itself the burden of retail location research.
Hopefully, Microsoft representatives at these retail locations would be more knowledgeable about Windows Phones and other products compared to those at Best Buy or carrier stores like AT&T and Verizon.

Remember the epic Star Trek Tricorder MP3 player from last year? Of course you do— we just gave a link. The Tricorder player undoubtedly had Star Wars fans in basements across the globe up in arms. Seethe no more Star Wars nerds, the novelty MP3 player industry hasn't forgotten you.
Meet the Light Saber Kei, an MP3 player designed to look like a light saber. It's also loaded with features: it's got a microSD slot, and I think there's some skip/volume buttons on there, maybe even a power button.
Okay, maybe it's not the most feature-packed player we've seen. But it's a light saber! That pretty much trumps everything. The player should be available in February, for a mere $24 from NCSX.

We don't think it's too much of a stretch to say that the Motorola Droid was the hottest Android phone to be released in 2009. Of course, the Verizon Wireless ads attacking AT&T and the Apple iPhone did a lot to bring attention to the smartphone, but it wasn't all hype. The smartphone delivered with excellent performance, an attention-grabbing 3.7-inch WVGA touch screen, and the benefits of Android 2.0, including Google Maps Navigation.

Court Says No More Loud Sex

BBC news reported in “Noisy Sex Woman Admits Abso Breach,” that Caroline Cartwright, a 48 year old woman in Britain, is being sentenced by the court because her sex is too loud. A neighbor formally complained after being late for work many times because she could not sleep at night. The mailman also complained, and so did a woman that walks her children to school in the morning. The sex was described as “unnatural” “murder” and “pain.”
Equipment was set up in the neighbor’s apartment, and the noise that leaked through the walls was 47 decibels (or, a loud, spirited conversation). Some of the best earplugs on the market only reduce to 29 decibels.
I’m all for loud passionate sex, but when it comes to infringing on others rights to pursue happiness (or a good night’s sleep) that’s when even I’ll say something’s got to give.
I don’t think there is anything wrong with the sounds. So what if it did sound like “pain,” maybe it was, but the fact it happened over and over means it was a pain worth re-visiting.
I think it’s ridiculous to take someone to court to try to get them to put a sock in it. If anything, the courts should be more interested in encouraging them to find a more suitable place to live. I think it’s clear the couple should move to a location where they can be themselves without affecting others.
This couple should certainly not be living in an apartment complex; they should have a separate home where they can make as much noise as they want. Even in that circumstance, it’s polite to close the windows.
