Do you ever wonder who the hell buys movie tie-in games? Turns out, it's PlayStation 3 owners.
According to research conducted by the Nielsen rating agency, spending by movie game buyers was highest on the PlayStation 3. They spend 17 percent over the average of all movie game buyers. 360 owners pretty much hit the average, coming just a single percent over the mean, and, surprisingly, Wii owners are the least likely to spend money on movie tie-in games -- they come in 6 percent below the average.
As you might expect, households that purchased a movie-based video game skewed strongly toward families with kids.
Of course, since the days of the PlayStation 2, Sony has positioned its consoles as movie-machines as well as game machines, first touting the innovation of including a DVD player in the PS2 and Blu-ray in the PS3, so it makes sense that movie fans would purchase a PlayStation 3 as opposed to a 360, then subsequently buy movie-based games to go along with the Blu-ray flicks they buy.
Regardless of who exactly buys movie-based games, they are generally really, really bad. I get why the game companies keep putting them out: A huge-budget blockbuster movie essentially acts as a marketing campaign for the game (and vice versa), but I don't understand why consumers keep buying shovelware titles based on movies. Vote with your dollars, people.
