FaceBook: The Movie

Aaron Sorkin Writing Facebook Movie

Source: Aaron Sorkin
August 28, 2008

Writer/producer Aaron Sorkin has announced on his newly-created Facebook page that he is going to be writing a movie about the popular social networking site.

"I've just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she's been dead for 33 years.)"

Mark Zuckenberg created the site in 2004 at Harvard during his sophomore year. It now has over 60 million members and is valued at $16 billion.

Sorkin wrote A Few Good Men, The American President, Malice, Charlie Wilson's War and The Trial of the Chicago 7, which is in pre-production according to him. He's also known for TV series "Sports Night," "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" and "The West Wing."

From his Fasebook group:
Welcome. I'm Aaron Sorkin. I understand there are a few other people using Facebook pages under my name--which I find more flattering than creepy--but this is me. I don't know how I can prove that but feel free to test me.

I've just agreed to write a movie for Sony and producer Scott Rudin about how Facebook was invented. I figured a good first step in my preparation would be finding out what Facebook is, so I've started this page. (Actually it was started by my researcher, Ian Reichbach, because my grandmother has more Internet savvy than I do and she's been dead for 33 years.)

Some of you might be familiar with some things I've written. I'm the author of two Broadway plays--A Few Good Men and The Farnsworth Invention, five feature films--A Few Good Men, The American President, Malice, Charlie Wilson's War and The Trial of the Chicago 7 which is in pre-production, and three television series--Sports Night, Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip and the first four seasons of The West Wing.

I honestly don't know how this works, which is why I'm here. If anyone has any questions I'd be happy to answer them as best I can. If anyone has any comments I'm glad to listen. And if anyone has any Facebook stories I think they might be helpful.

That's all. I'll try to get better at this as I get more practice.

Aaron

* I feel about this introduction the way I felt about Sophie's Choice--It could have been funnier.

Favreau Gets to Work on Iron Man 2

August 21, 2008

The Los Angeles Times talked to Iron Man 2 director Jon Favreau, who says they have started working on the sequel:

I just talked to Jon Favreau a bit ago, and he said that while there hasn't been an formal announcement on the sequel to "Iron Man," he's begun developing it. "We're working on it now," he said, "which hasn't been officially announced. It will be released in 2010."

Marvel Studios and Paramount Pictures are targeting an April 30, 2010 release date in order to be the first film to kick-off that summer, much like Iron Man did on May 2nd of this year.

Justin Theroux (Tropic Thunder) is writing the script and in addition to Robert Downey Jr., the first film's co-stars Gwyneth Paltrow and Terrence Howard are expected to return as well.

Tri-C to Implement Permit Parking System

Tri-C to Implement Permit Parking System
8/14/2008
Media Contact - Dan Minnich (216) 987-4807

CLEVELAND – Cuyahoga Community College will implement a new parking management plan beginning this Fall Semester. The new plan, effective August 23, calls for a College-wide permit parking system. While the cost of operating the parking system at Tri-C continues to rise, fees for the current pay-on-exit plan have remained unchanged for the past 18 years. The last fee increase for parking at the College was in 1990 when it was doubled from 25 cents to 50 cents per exit.

The new plan, which has been in the works for more than two years, will utilize hangtag permits in place of the existing parking gates and coin deposit boxes located on each of the College’s campuses. Despite the change, parking rates at Tri-C will remain among the lowest of colleges and universities in Ohio.

“We are making the change now because maintaining the system that has been in place for over 40 years would require additional funds to upgrade,” said Clayton Harris, chief of police at Cuyahoga Community College. “We’ve also had several complaints about the pay-on-exit system over the years. Several studies that we’ve done have shown that many colleges and universities are using the permit system. Plus, it’s a fresh start for the new academic year.”

Students can purchase a full-semester hangtag permit for $56.25. They can pay for their hangtag permits and receive them via U.S. mail through the online registration process on My Tri-C Space. Students can also purchase hangtag permits at the Business Office.

Visitors can use the electronic Visitor Parking Meter Stations located in each visitor lot. The cost of parking in the visitor lot using this alternative will be dependent upon the amount of time a patron uses the lot on any particular visit.

All students, faculty, staff and visitors have the option of using daily scratch-off hangtag permits, which can be purchased at the Business Office at a cost of 75 cents per day. Multiple daily permits can and should be purchased in advance depending on anticipated use.

All students, faculty, staff and visitors will be expected to have their hangtag permits on August 23. Hangtag permits are valid on any College campus. For additional information, please visit https://portal.tri-c.edu/parking/default.htm.

August 27, 2008

Both mylordsinuhe and fq9 have posted photos of a Long Beach, California set for Tranformers: Revenge of the Fallen. You can view the photos here and here.

Transformers 2 - Movie Chronicles has also posted a report on the filming with some spoilers:

I work in the area and they have the whole area set up to be China, as you guys know. Now I did see Prime, Bumblebee, the silver corvette, 2 blue cars (small) and Ironhide. All were parked on the back lot behind Catalina Landing!

The scene I witnessed was a traffic scene where they were driving down Shoreline Drive and then 2 flatbed Trucks merge into traffic. THEN BOOOM!!! One of the two trucks blew in half.

Michael Bay's sequel hits theaters on June 26, 2009.

Will Christopher Nolan Do a Third Batman?

Will Christopher Nolan Do a Third Batman?

August 27, 2008

While the internet is going crazy with casting rumors that aren't true for Christopher Nolan's possible third Batman movie, the director himself is on vacation as The Dark Knight approaches $500 million domestically.

The Hollywood Reporter has published an interesting article about the film's marketing and the deaths of both Heath Ledger and Conway Wickliffe before the film's release. The piece ends with a bit on the third installment.

And Warners and Legendary are both interested in doing a third in the series, but all involved say it will be up to Nolan to come to them with a story and a plan.

"There are a lot of us who emotionally would love to do it," Roven says. "But it's really Chris' call. Chris is the kind of filmmaker who just doesn't think about the next movie before he has completely finished the movie he is working on."

For now, Nolan is taking a well-earned vacation.

Says Roven, "When he comes back, we will see how he feels."

We will be waiting patiently...

Kevin Smith makes a porno with `Zack and Miri’

Kevin Smith makes a porno with `Zack and Miri’

By DAVID GERMAIN, AP Movie Writer

LOS ANGELES - Kevin Smith likes to watch porn online, not to get his jollies but to marvel at how extreme the art of exhibitionist sex can be.

“I’m a morning porn peruser, and not for the titillation factor. I just find it interesting,” said Smith, whose latest comedy is “Zack and Miri Make a Porno,” the tale of best friends shooting their own skin flick to dig themselves out of debt. “I’ll go read Google news, I’ll go read Guardian UK, go read our Web site, and then if I’ve got nothing else, I will just peruse the porn sites, because it’s an ever-expanding world.”

“Just when you see the most outlandish clip you could ever see, somebody introduces something new. I just check in periodically just to see how far porn has gone in my absence,” Smith said after screening “Zack and Miri” for The Associated Press at his Los Angeles home last week.

Debuting Oct. 31, “Zack and Miri” stars Seth Rogen and Elizabeth Banks as lifelong buddies who have shared an apartment for years but never considered each other as potential mates.

Writer-director Smith — whose films include “Clerks,” “Dogma” and “Chasing Amy” — has taken two people who have yet to realize they’re a couple and cast them into a sweet little romance — with a whole lot of sex and swearing.

Profanity is almost a given for Smith, whose characters barrage one another with four-letter words.

“It turns some people off but that’s how mostly everybody I know speaks,” Smith said. “It’s kind of strange. Whenever somebody goes, `That offends me,’ I’m like, wow, what kind of weird, opposite bizarro frame of mind do you live in? Cursing is just so second nature, you don’t even think of it as cursing any more. It’s just your lexicon.”

At the outset of the new film, Rogen’s Zack and Banks’ Miri have known each other so long and so well that they’re almost like siblings. The twenty-something slackers blissfully share a dumpy apartment on which they’re far behind on the rent and utility bills. When the electricity is turned off in the middle of winter, they burn their unpaid bills in a garbage can for heat.

A chance encounter with a gay porn actor (Justin Long) gives Zack the notion that they could make their own sex flick to pay off their debts. When he and Miri add up how much money they could clear from one dirty movie, they wonder why everyone isn’t busy making porn.

“Because other people have options and dignity,” Zack concludes.

They recruit an amateur cast and crew to make their porno, among them “Clerks” co-star Jeff Anderson as “cinematographer” and Jason Mewes — Jay to Smith’s Silent Bob, the pair of stoners in most of his movies — as a well-endowed “actor.”

The cast also includes Craig Robinson as Zack’s co-worker and producer, “Superman Returns” star Brandon Routh as Long’s lover, and former adult-film star Traci Lords and current porn queen Katie Morgan.

The porn shoot becomes something of a loving, though lewd, re-creation of how Smith made his debut film, “Clerks,” at the New Jersey convenience store at which he worked.

“Basically, it’s a dressed-up version of making your first film. It just happens to be a porn film,” Smith said.

Just like “Clerks,” “Zack and Miri” initially was hit with an NC-17 tag by the ratings board of the Motion Picture Association of America. That rating prohibits anyone younger than 17 from seeing a movie.

Smith nipped and tucked the key objectionable segment, a comically over-the-top sex scene between Mewes and Morgan. But the ratings board held to the NC-17 designation, which Smith later got knocked down to an R rating after stating his case to the MPAA appeals board.

With the exception of one tender, tame sex scene, the porn action in “Zack and Miri” was meant to be outrageous, a commentary on the impossibly silly deeds in real skin flicks, Smith said.

“It’s not titillating in the least. It’s comedic,” Smith said. “If you’re turned on by this, then we didn’t do our job very well.”

Nikon D90 Released Today!

Digital SLR Camera Nikon D90

August 27, 2008

Stunning 12.3-megapixel image quality, broad control and the world’s first* digital SLR movie function combine to deliver unsurpassed creative freedom in a D-SLR.

D90

TOKYO – Nikon Corporation is pleased to announce the introduction of its newest DX-format digital SLR, the D90. More than just a new camera, the D90 represents a new era of digital SLR fun and creativity.

The first thing that will amaze photographers about the D90 is its stunning image quality, which takes its inspiration from Nikon’s flagship DX-format digital SLR, the D300. The D90’s image sensor and 12.3 effective megapixels combine with Nikon’s exclusive EXPEED image processing to deliver outstanding images featuring fine details, smooth tones, rich colors and low noise across a wide ISO sensitivity range.

The D90 is the world’s first* digital SLR camera with a movie shooting function that delivers genuinely cinematic results, enhanced by the creatively shallow depth of field made possible by the DX-format sensor. This is further refined by the optical quality and broad selection of NIKKOR lenses — the same lenses relied upon by professional photographers the world over. Thanks to the D90’s large image sensor, D-Movie images exhibit less noise than those of a typical camcorder, most notably in low-light situations.

The D90 also provides remarkable performance and operability, featuring Nikon’s exclusive Scene Recognition System that advances precision in auto focus, auto exposure, and auto white balance in diverse shooting situations. Live View mode allows shooting while confirming the subject on the large 3-in., approx. 920k-dot high-density color LCD and offers three contrast-detect AF modes to allow photographers to focus on any point in the frame, enabling a greater variety of composition. In addition to wide and normal area AF, the D90 offers face priority AF in Live View mode for even sharper pictures of people.

All of these powerful features and more are housed in a compact, comfortable-to-hold body, with intuitive controls. In other words, the D90 is a camera that will satisfy the requirements of passionate photographers who demand superior image quality and crave exciting new photographic possibilities.

Nikon D90 Feature Highlights

Newly designed Nikon DX-format CMOS image sensor with wide ISO sensitivity range with low noise

D90’s 12.3 effective megapixels provides outstanding resolution, delivering images with extraordinarily defined detail and expanded enlargement capacity. The extremely wide sensitivity range of ISO 200 to 3200 delivers incredibly low-noise characteristics throughout. Furthermore, sensitivity can be increased to Hi 1 (ISO 6400 equivalent) and decreased to Lo 1 (ISO 100 equivalent) to expand shooting versatility. The camera also employs the Image Sensor Cleaning function that works to free image-degrading dust particles from the sensor’s optical low-pass filter.

EXPEED for smooth tones, rich colors and fine details

Nikon’s comprehensive digital image-processing EXPEED technology is optimized for the D90 to realize the high-quality, high-speed image processing capability. EXPEED also contributes to the outstanding performance of other powerful features such as Live View and the new Face Detection System.

D-Movie: the world’s first* D-SLR movie mode

In a world first* for D-SLRs, the D90 offers a movie function, allowing you to shoot 320 x 216 pixels, 640 x 424 pixels or HD720p (1,280 x 720 pixels) movies at the professional smoothness of 24 frames per second in motion JPEG format. The D90’s sensor, which is much larger than the sensor of a typical camcorder, ensures higher image quality and exceptional low-noise, high ISO sensitivity performance, even during movie shooting. Capturing creative movie clips or the drama of life’s moving moments is further enhanced by the wide selection of incredibly sharp NIKKOR interchangeable lenses that are available, from fisheye to wide-angle to super-telephoto. And Micro NIKKOR lenses bring the magic of extreme close-up imagery to movie making.

*As of August 27, 2008, according to research conducted by Nikon Corporation
Note: Autofocus and some other functions are not available when recording movies.

Scene Recognition System integrated with Face Detection System

The D90 precisely reads the color and brightness information of each scene from the 420-pixel RGB sensor, and applies this to auto focus, auto exposure and auto white balance. The D90 also recognizes human faces using the new Face Detection System, data which is incorporated during calculation, resulting in faces with newfound definition and accuracy as well as enabling face priority AF in Live View mode and immediate zoom into people’s faces in playback zoom.

Easy-to-use Live View mode

One press of the Live View button activates the D90’s Live View mode, delivering a bright, crisp image to the 3-in., approx. 920k-dot color LCD and allowing comfortable shooting without looking through the viewfinder. There are three contrast-detect AF modes that let you focus on any point in the frame: Face priority AF automatically detects up to five faces and focuses on that calculated to be the closest. Wide area AF offers a large AF area suitable for handheld shooting, and normal area AF provides focus with pinpoint accuracy when using a tripod. And when Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) lenses are in use, photographers will enjoy the benefit of a VR-smoothed image, even in Live View mode.

Picture Control System: Customize the visual style of your images

Nikon’s Picture Control System enables users to customize the look and mood of images. Six original setting options are available — Standard, Neutral, Vivid, Monochrome, Portrait and Landscape — for easy customization of image preferences.

Active D-Lighting for smooth tone reproduction in high-contrast lighting

The D90’s Active D-Lighting accurately restores details in the shadows and highlighted areas, which are often lost in high-contrast lighting situations, by localizing tone control while shooting. There are four levels, including the new “Extra High.” Active D-Lighting can be used manually or set to Auto mode. It is also possible to bracket your pictures, allowing the capture of one image with Active D-Lighting and one without.

Versatile, practical 11-point AF system

Thanks to the Multi-CAM 1000 autofocus module, the D90’s 11-point AF system offers fast and precise autofocus coverage across the frame with the most sensitive AF sensor operating from the center. In addition, the D90 features versatile AF-area modes to handle most shooting situations: Single-point AF is recommended for stationary subjects, dynamic-area AF for moving subjects, auto-area AF for spontaneous shooting and 3D-tracking (11 points) AF for when you want to change the composition after focusing on your subject.

Bright pentaprism viewfinder featuring frame coverage of approx. 96%

The D90 has a precise eye-level pentaprism viewfinder with approx. 96% (centered) frame coverage and an easy-to-view 19.5 mm eyepoint (at -1.0 m-1). The built-in 16-frame superimposed grid display can be activated to assist in the creation of better-balanced compositions.

Advanced Scene Modes for superior image quality

The D90 features Advanced Scene Modes: Portrait, Landscape, Close-up, Sports and Night Portrait. These modes not only adjust exposure and image processing, but also judge the optimum Active D-Lighting and Picture Control settings to obtain the best results. The D90 also recognizes if VR (Vibration Reduction) is on or off and minimizes noise even in dimly lit scenes.

Extensive palette of in-camera Retouch Menus

The D90’s designers incorporated a wide variety of image editing functions, making it easy for users to enhance images within the camera. The D90 introduces several new retouch options: Distortion Control adjusts lens aberration, Straighten corrects inclination of the image, while Fisheye produces optical effects similar to a fisheye lens.

Engineered for precision and durability

Accurate exposures rely on precise shutters and the D90’s electronically timed shutter mechanism was specifically engineered for long, accurate service. To ensure this, D90 shutters, assembled in D90 bodies, underwent exhaustive 100,000 shutter-release cycle testing.

‘A God Who Cussed’

‘A God Who Cussed’

Director Kevin Smith remembers George Carlin

Kevin Smith
Special Guest Columnist
Updated: 5:10 PM ET Jun 23, 2008

They say you should never meet your heroes. I've found this a good rule to live by, but as with any rule, there's always an exception.

My first exposure to George Carlin was in 1982, when HBO aired his "Carlin at Carnegie" stand-up special. When I saw the advert—featuring a clip of Carlin talking about the clichéd criminal warning of "Don't try anything funny," and then adding, "When they're not looking, I like to go …," followed by a brief explosion of goofy expressions and pantomime—I immediately asked my parents if I could tape it on our new BetaMax video recorder.

That was a hilarious bit. But when I finally watched the special, Carlin blew my doors off. Whether he was spinning a yarn about Tippy, his farting dog, or analyzing the contents of his fridge, Carlin expressed himself not only humorously, but amazingly eloquently as well. I was, as they say, in stitches.

And that was before he got to the Seven Words You Can't Say on Television.

I was 12 years old, watching a man many years my senior curse a blue streak while exposing the hypocrisy of a medium (and a society) that couldn't deal with the public usage of terms they probably employed regularly in their private lives. And while he seemed to revel in being a rebel, here was a man who also clearly loved the English language, warts and all—even the so-called "bad words" (although, as George would say, there are no such things as "bad words"). I wouldn't say George Carlin taught me obscenities, but I would definitely say he taught me that the casual use of obscenities wasn't reserved just for drunken sailors, as the old chestnut goes; even intelligent people were allowed to incorporate them into their everyday conversations (because George was nothing if not intelligent).

From that moment forward, I was an instant Carlin disciple. I bought every album, watched every HBO special, and even sat through "The Prince of Tides" just because he played a small role in the film. I spent years turning friends on to the Cult of Carlin, the World According to George, and even made pilgrimages to see him perform live (the first occasion being a gig at Farleigh Dickinson University in 1988). Carlin influenced my speech and my writing. Carlin replaced Catholicism as my religion.

Sixteen years later, I sat across from the star of "Carlin at Carnegie" in the dining room of the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles. It was a meeting I'd dreamed of and dreaded simultaneously. George Carlin was the type of social observer/critic I most wanted to emulate … but he was a celebrity, too. What if he turned out to be a true prick?

What I quickly discovered was that, in real life, George was, well, George. Far from a self-obsessed jerk, he was mild-mannered enough to be my Dad. He was as interested as he was interesting, well-read and polite to a fault—all while casually dropping F-bombs. But most impressive, he didn't treat me like an audience member, eschewing actual conversation, electing instead to simply perform the whole meeting, more "on" than real. He talked to me like one of my friends would talk to me: familiar, unguarded, authentic.

I made three films with George over the course of the next six years, starting with "Dogma" and his portrayal of Cardinal Glick, the pontiff-publicist responsible for the Catholic Church's recall of the standard crucifix in favor of the more congenial, bubbly "Buddy Christ." A few years later, I wrote him a lead role in "Jersey Girl"—as Bart Trinke (or "Pop"), the father of Ben Affleck's character. It called for a more dramatic performance than George was used to giving, but the man pulled it off happily and beautifully. (Something most folks probably don't know about George: He took acting very seriously. The man was almost a Method actor.) Sadly, I consider that "Jersey Girl" part my one failing on George's behalf, and not for the reasons most would assume (the movie was not reviewed kindly, to say the least). No, I failed because George had asked me to write a different role for him.

In 2001, George did me a solid when he accepted the part of the orally fixated hitchhiker who knew exactly how to get a ride in "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back." When he wrapped his scene in that flick, I thanked him for making the time, and he said, "Just do me a favor: Write me my dream role one day." When I inquired what that'd be, he offered, "I wanna play a priest who strangles children."

It was a classic Carlin thing to say: a little naughty and a lot honest. I always figured there'd be time to give George what he asked for. Unfortunately, he left too soon.

He was, and will likely remain, the smartest person I've ever met. But really, he was much more than just a person. Without a hint of hyperbole, I can say he was a god, a god who cussed.

Untitled George Clooney Project

We At MovieMiguel.com have the inside scoop on George Clooney's next film project!

From an inside source:
"It's official that a film maker is going to Roswell to produce a military base comedy (in the Thanksgiving timeframe). The star of the movie will be
George Clooney and parts of it will be filmed at The New Mexico Military Institute... You'll be kept informed as events unfold."

Update: though my souce didnt reveal any more information at this time I happened across this story posted on JoBlo.com on Aug, 12th:

" Clooney's Smokehouse production company has apparently bought the rights to Jonathan Mahler's The Challenge, a book about Salim Hamdan -- a Guantanamo Bay inmate recently sentenced to prison for his involvement with the infamous terrorist. Rumours abound that Clooney is considering taking a role as US navy lawyer Lieutenant Commander Charles Swift, who defended Hamdan and whose life fell apart as a result."

Is this the movie that will be filmed at NMMI? time will tell. (or if you know let us know!)

New Fast & Furious trailer when?

New FATF trailer when? Aug. 15, 2008
Source: JoBlo.com

by: Mike Sampson

If you've been jonesin a little Paul Walker/Vin Diesel love since the original FAST AND THE FURIOUS, you're about to get your fix again pretty soon. We've learned that the trailer for their new movie, FAST AND FURIOUS, will be in theaters with DEATH RACE a week from today. Kinda perfect marketing, eh? The trailer will run 2:07 so we should be getting some meat and potatoes and not just a short tease. Justin Lin, who directed the TOKYO DRIFT installment of the franchise, has returned to reteam Brian O'Connor and Dominic Toretto (Walker and Diesel respectively) for more racing and other assorted shenanigans. FAF doesn't hit theaters until next June but we'll get our first glimpse next Friday and hopefully online sometime shortly before that. We'll have more for you from the set of FAST AND FURIOUS including something we've never done before at JoBlo.com. I'm not at liberty to discuss what that is but it may or may not involve giving Vin Diesel an oily back rub (JimmyO really knows how to work the trapezius). So stay tuned to JoBlo.com for the FAST AND FURIOUS trailer and much more!

Warner Bros. Confirms Superman Reboot

Warner Bros. Confirms Superman Reboot

Source: Steelsheen
August 22, 2008

Just a few days after this article was posted, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has told The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman. We assume this will be similar to how Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was a reboot of Ang Lee's Hulk. Here is what the article says:

Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."

The article also talks about Warner Bros. adapting other DC properties over the new few years. "By 2011, Mr. Robinov plans for DC Comics to supply the material for up to two of the six to eight tent-pole films he hopes Warner Bros. will have in the pipeline by then," it says. Those projects will likely be about single characters at first, and will be darker much like The Dark Knight:

With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.

We'll let you know as soon as the studio has announced its plans for future DC movies.

Quantum of Solace Moved Back a Week

Update: Quantum of Solace Moved Back a Week

Source: Columbia Pictures
August 22, 2008

Columbia Pictures and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, announced today that it will release Quantum of Solace on November 14th in North America. "The strategic move places the highly-anticipated James Bond adventure one week closer to the prime movie-going holiday window and takes advantage of last week's decision to move the release date of 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince,'" said the studios.

"We saw the film recently in London and Marc Forster, Daniel Craig and the entire team at EON have truly delivered another extraordinary Bond adventure," said Jeff Blake, Chairman of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution for the Columbia Tristar Motion Picture Group. "'Quantum of Solace' is a seamless continuation of the storyline that began with the last film. We believe November 14th is a great date that allows us to play straight through Thanksgiving and right into Christmas. The Bond films have a long history of entertaining audiences in this holiday corridor going back to Goldeneye in 1995. The studio enjoyed tremendous success opening 'Casino Royale' in North America on November 17, 2006, and we believe this decision will give the public a wider opportunity to see the film over the holiday."

Quantum of Solace will begin its worldwide roll out on October 31.

The move makes Madagascar: Escape 2 Africa the only wide release on Nov. 7 (at least for now), and puts Quantum of Solace up against Australia, Nothing Like the Holidays, Role Models and Soul Men on Nov. 14.

UPDATE: In response to the change in release date for Quantum of Solace, Universal Pictures has moved up Role Models one week to Nov. 7.

Favreau Gets to Work on Iron Man 2

Miniature Dachshund Bites Off Sleeping Woman's Big Toe

By Robert Paul Reyes

"An Illinois woman says her beloved miniature dachshund gnawed off her right big toe while she was asleep. Linda Floyd told the Alton Telegraph for a story Wednesday that her beloved Roscoe was euthanized because of safety concerns."

Quotation from the Associated Press

Dog bites man not a story; dog gnaws off lady's big toe an interesting story. Now if a guy woke up to discover that his beloved dog had bitten off his penis, that would be the biggest story of the year. It's not beneath me to cover human interest (animal interest?) stories.

Full disclosure: The lady is diabetic and she has no feeling in her toes because of nerve damage. The darn woman should not have left her toes dangling off the edge of the bed. She's lucky her little dog was satisfied with munching on only one toe.

Beloved Roscoe my a**! If this lady loved her pooch why on earth would she have him euthanized? She could have given her doggie to a friend or put it up for adoption.

Safety concerns my a**! A miniature dachshund is a threat only to Mini-Me and a person with no feelings in his toes.

I have no sympathy for Ms. Floyd; I hope she gets another dog and he takes a bit off her butt.

McDonald's Corp. Launches Specialty Coffee Stores In Central Ohio

McDonald's Corp. Launches Specialty Coffee Stores In Central Ohio

Posted: August 21st, 2008 12:23 PM GMT-05:00

McDonald's Corp. recently launched its McCafe Coffees in central Ohio, which focuses on specialty java brews, according to Convenience Store News.

COMPETITIVE WATCH: McDonald's Launches McCafe Coffees

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- With Americans consuming upwards of 400 million cups of coffee each day, retailers continuously scramble to secure market share. While convenience store operators have a built-in share, the industry faces new competition from McDonald’s, which launched a new campaign called McCafe Coffees in central Ohio, which focuses on specialty java brews.

"McDonald’s continues to engage customers by extending premium coffee choices during breakfast and throughout the day," Jeff Newman, president, McDonald’s Central Ohio Marketing Cooperative, said in a released statement. "Our customers can now enjoy a variety of new McCafe Coffees at a great value."

The Co-op for McDonald’s is one of the first markets in the country and the first in Ohio to offer the McCafe product line, featuring lattes, mochas, espresso shots and cappuccinos in a variety of options and flavors including Iced, Hazelnut, Caramel and Vanilla (regular and sugar free), and Premium Roast Coffee and Hot Chocolate. Most are available in small (12 ounces), medium (16 ounces) and large (20 ounces) sizes. Prices generally start at $1.99, and customers can select whole or non-fat milk.

Editor's Insight: McDonald's has not been dissuaded from pursing the specialty coffee market, despite a slower than expected customer response to its specialty coffee offerings in Michigan and Kansas City, Mo., as reported back on 05-12-08.

The coffee bars are an extension of the specialty coffee initiative, which is a bold effort to cash in on the specialty coffee business.

VendingMarketWatch has observed that the coffee bar expansion carries the risk of changing the company's identity. The initiative has been further challenged by recent changes in the U.S. economy; namely, consumers' new emphasis on bargains.

Nevertheless, specialty coffee sales remain strong overall. Vending and coffee service operators need to continue to offer consumers what they want. 08-21-08 by Elliot Maras
