Producer M. Dal Walton III announced today that he has closed a deal with Killer Tomato Entertainment , Inc. to produce a reprise of the 1978 Comedy Cult Classic Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! and tapped the creative forces behind the internet phenomenon "Ask A Ninja," Kent Nichols and Douglas Sarine, to adapt the property for the big screen with Nichols to make his much anticipated feature film directorial debut. The original Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! spawned three sequels, including the George Clooney starrer Return of the Killer Tomatoes and the Saturday morning "AKT" animated series that helped launch the Fox Kid's Network.
With over 80 million web views of their now iconic "Ask A Ninja" series, Nichols and Sarine have garnered multiple kudos including being voted the Best Series of 2006 at the YouTube Video Awards. "The Ninja," as the character is affectionately referred to, was the recipient of the Best Actor Award at the first ever Webby Film and Video Award Ceremony. The Wall Street Journal (July 29-30 2006) even dubbed them the "Moguls of New Media." The series' cunning wit along with its hilariously twisted "Dear Abby" advice, philosophical web blog and social commentary, has captured a wide audience, including the sometimes elusive yet desirable demographic of teenage boys. Nichols and Sarine will now parlay their spectacular online success to feature films and bring their unique brand of humor and cultural satire to the updated Attack of the Killer Tomatoes! feature.
When asked about the opportunity to bring killer tomatoes to a new generation, Nichols stated, "'Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!' is the masterwork of a generation. We can only aspire to recapture that magic."
"The original picture spawned a generation of entertainers inspired by the irreverent and hilarious political satire created by John DeBello, Costa Dillon and Steve Peace. The sublime comedy Kent and Douglas have created for New Media is both brilliant and hilarious -- they are the perfect team to bring 'Killer Tomatoes' into the 21st Century," said Walton.
M. Dal Walton III, who acquired the rights from Killer Tomato Entertainment, Inc., will produce the pic and has brought Emmett/Furla Films, a wholly owned subsidiary of Family Room Entertainment on board to co-produce.
