speculation
The internet is abuzz with rumors of what the next Indiana Jones film may entail, and we couldn't help but wonder what it may mean for a new video game. A word of warning before we begin: This story will contain speculation on our part, and if the rumors turn out to be true, a few spoilers to boot.
According to the New Zealand website Stuff, George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are currently working on the script for the next Indiana Jones, and are expected to begin filming next year. The plot will reportedly involve the Bermuda Triangle, and will have Indy "facing his biggest challenge yet." We hope to God that doesn't involve more aliens, but seeing as how Stuff is reporting a return to the series' roots for this installment, we're guessing any fantasy elements in the new film won't be extraterrestial again.
What does any of this have to do with video games? Let's face it: if there is a new Indiana Jones movie, we would expect a new Lego game to include it, and possibly a non-block-based game as well. In that case the Bermuda Triangle presents some enticing possibilities: Not only would the location offer plenty of sunken ships and aircraft to explore, but it could introduce time-travel into the mix as well – a good excuse for why Indy could still be cold-cocking Nazis. The Bermuda Triangle has also been tied to the lost city of Atlantis, a setting that has already given us one good Indiana Jones video game in the past.
Shia LeBeouf will also reportedly be in the new film, which opens the door for co-op play as well. My personal wish? Keep his on-screen time in the movie to a minimum, and take full advantage of his part to explore multiplayer possibilities in any follow-up game.
