Sony Pictures Releasing International has unveiled its first major feature film online Twitter game for Terminator Salvation. The full press release:

In anticipation of the worldwide release of the motion picture Terminator Salvation, Twitter users will have the chance to join the human resistance against the machines in Sony Pictures Releasing International's first-ever game created for the social networking platform, it was announced today by Sal Ladestro, executive vice president of marketing, Sony Pictures Releasing International. Users can follow tweets from the resistance at Twitter.com/Resistance2018.

In the Terminator Salvation Twitter game, members of the human resistance communicate with each other through Twitter and turn to the community for help in decoding intercepted Skynet transmissions. Players earn points through timely assistance in decoding these messages and, with these points, rise in rank within the Resistance Army. Players must constantly be on guard against the machines, which periodically and randomly choose a number of players and penalize them a percentage of their points. A companion blog augments the information within Twitter and hosts a leader board for the game.

Sal Ladestro, Executive Vice President of Marketing, for Sony Pictures Releasing International (SPRI) commented, "Twitter users can join John Connor in the war against the machines by following the tweets at Resistance 2018. In the fight against Skynet and the Terminators, mass communication is vital, so it's no surprise that the resistance would turn to Twitter. We think this is the perfect environment for the Terminator game as it allows users to interact with the movie, their friends and other game players instantaneously."

A worldwide phenomenon, Twitter's micro-blogging social networking site has been expanding exponentially across the globe in recent months. Between February 2008 and February 2009, new accounts on Twitter were up 1,841%, with an 87% increase between January 2009 and February 2009 alone. More than 90% of Twitter users choose to make their updates public.

Terminator Salvation is set in post-apocalyptic 2018, where John Connor (Christian Bale) is the man fated to lead the human resistance against Skynet and its army of Terminators. But the future that Connor was raised to believe in is altered in part by the appearance of Marcus Wright (Sam Worthington), a stranger whose last memory is of being on death row. Connor must decide whether Marcus has been sent from the future, or rescued from the past. As Skynet prepares its final onslaught, Connor and Marcus both embark on an odyssey that takes them into the heart of Skynet's operations, where they uncover the terrible secret behind the possible annihilation of mankind.

The highly anticipated new installment of The Terminator film franchise, Terminator Salvation is directed by McG (Charlie's Angels, We Are Marshall). The screenplay is by Michael Ferris & John Brancato. Moritz Borman, Derek Anderson, Victor Kubicek and Jeffrey Silver are the producers, with Jeanne Allgood, Dan Lin, Mario F. Kassar, Andrew G. Vajna and Joel B. Michaels serving as executive producers.

The film stars Christian Bale (The Dark Knight) as John Connor, Sam Worthington (The Great Raid) as Marcus Wright, Anton Yelchin (Star Trek) as Kyle Reese, Bryce Dallas Howard (Spider-Man 3) as Kate Connor, Moon Bloodgood (What Just Happened?) as Blair Williams, Common (Wanted) as Barnes, Jane Alexander (The Unborn) as Virginia, Jadagrace as Star, and Helena Bonham Carter (Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix) as Serena Kogen

The behind-the-scenes creative team includes cinematographer Shane Hurlbut (We Are Marshall), production designer Martin Laing (Pearl Harbor), editor Conrad Buff (Shooter), costume designer Michael Wilkinson (Watchmen), visual effects supervisor Charlie Gibson (Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End), and animatronics supervisor John Rosengrant, formerly of Stan Winston Studios. The music is by Danny Elfman (Milk, Hellboy II: The Golden Army).

Terminator Salvation will be released in the U.S. on May 21, 2009 by Warner Bros. Pictures. Sony Pictures Releasing International is distributing the film in most international territories between May 27, 2009 and June 13, 2009.

Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) is a subsidiary of Sony Corporation of America (SCA), a subsidiary of Tokyo-based Sony Corporation. A Sneak Peek at the Transformers: ROTF Game!

Source:Edward Douglas
April 17, 2009

In two months, one week, a day and some number of hours, Michael Bay's highly-anticipated summer sequel Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen will finally be released, but Superhero Hype! got an advance demo of the new Activision tie-in game by Activision production coordinator Mike Mejia. The game will be released in stores one day before the movie on June 23rd. Activision has been working even closer with Michael Bay and DreamWorks to make sure that the movie and the game were intermeshed, so that they enhance each other.

There are a couple of distinct differences between the new game and the previous Transformers game, released in 2007 in conjunction with the first movie, the biggest one being that Activision has created a separate game specifically geared to the Wii platform, rather than just the same game across all platforms. (More on the those differences below.) According to Mejia, Activision played close attention to what gamers liked and didn't like about the earlier game and made three big changes: The first is that they've allowed the player to choose a lot more characters on both sides of the battle, as well as a lot of different missions, rather than just following the same story linearly. Mejia confirmed that they've completely redesigned the robots' transformations, so that the changes happen more fluidly without causing a loss in momentum during gameplay. For the first time, they're also taking advantage of the Xbox Live environment allowing for full-feature multiplayer games like "Death Match" and "Capture the Flag" that can either be played via factions (user chooses which side and can only work with others on their side) or non-faction. Mejia described the latter as a way people can simulate "playing with their toys" in that basically anything goes.

Being that the sequel is shrouded in secrecy, the Activision reps couldn't say too much about the voice cast for the game--which apparently includes a few people not in the movie--nor could they talk about how many Autobots and Decepticons you will be able to play nor the other robots that will be available for purchase via Xbox DLC (downloadable content). None of that has been announced yet, but we got a great look at some of the things you'll be able to do in the new game and the overall gameplay in various modes.

At the end of the last movie, Megatron was defeated, and since then, Starscream has taken over the leadership of the Decepticons as various incursions have been popping up all over the globe. The humans are now working closer with the Autobots to stop those incursions, particularly the human's military unit NEST (standing for Networked Elements: Supporters and Transformers), all of which comes into play in the new movie and game.

The first mission we were shown takes place in Shanghai and takes full advantage of the new gameplay feature as you have a choice of a number of Autobots or Decepticons with which to play the level. Mejia went with Ironhide, and the level intro showed Tyrese Gibson's Sgt Epps briefing Ironhide on his mission as he lands on a roof in the city and immediately starts battling against the Decepticon Sideways (the one in the trailer we see turning into an Audio RI inside a building). Each of the robots in the game has their own special abilities and specific weapons, Ironhide having a gun turret that can be laid down to provide extra fire. Ironhide's transformation did seem more fluid than with the previous game as the Autobot was able to change back and forth to his jeep mode with ease, as well as being able to climb up buildings in his robot form.

We were then shown how that same mission might be played from the other side, as we went through the same level as Sideways, a completely different experience in that the Decepticon not only fought Ironhide, but also had to take on the Autobot's military assistance. His objective and M.O. is considerably more destructive--his special weapon is a landmine--and it essentially enhances the playability of each level depending on which robot you decide to play it with.

Mejio ran us through another level using Bumblebee, showing how the robots will integrate with humans in the game; in this case, it was Shia LaBeouf's Sam, who becomes a part of that particular mission. After that, we were given a demo of Starscream's new flight mode in a scenario where he attacks a fleet of aircraft carriers.

The big question on our minds when we came to this demo was answered as Mejio showed us presumably one of the later missions in the game, where Optimus Prime faces the Devastator, the enormous amalgam of six Constructicons that appears briefly in the trailer. The Devastator looks AMAZING, completely to a scale that makes the 30-foot Optimus look puny, and the game gives us a really good look at the amount of enhanced detail that went into its design, as Mejida paused the game and used the camera controls to zoom in and around the enormous robot to show that the giant adversary was just as detailed from every angle. Seriously, if the Devastator looks this good in the video game, we can only hope that it'll be even more amazing when we see it on the IMAX screen; it's certainly one of the more impressive and imposing game bosses we've seen in a long time. (They couldn't say whether the Devastator would be playable or whether we might see it in its six individual components sometime earlier in the game, but let's hope so.)

Afterwards, we were given a brief demo of the Wii version, which looks and feels very different, although is also much closer to the previous version of the game in some ways, being more linear than the Xbox version and with fewer choices along the way. What's enhanced is the ability to play with two players at once, taking advantage of the Wii's Co-Op capabilities for teamplay, where a second player can jump in at any time and help the robot facing the level. In the case of Ironhide, the second player gets a Remote Weapons System that can create a shield in front of the robot or provide added fire, as well as share energy in case the primary player is running low. There will also be an "Arena Mode" in which two players can each play a robot taking on hundreds of adversaries. We were also shown the same Starscream level we saw earlier in Wii mode, again using some of the same Co-Op features, but also taking advantage of the Wii nunchuk controller, which can be used to make Starscream do elaborate rolls while in jet mode. The important thing to note is that the levels in the Wii version follow a similar story as the main version and presumably the movie, although we were told there were things that one might only see briefly in the movie that are expanded upon for the game.

The Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen video game will hit stores on June 23, followed a day later by the Michael Bay movie of the same name (Sorry, that one you can just watch, not play.) You can already pre-order the game for all the varying platforms from Amazon.com and check out more screenshots from the game at the newly-launched official site, though you'll just have to take our word on how cool the Devastator looks.

SAG National Board of Directors Approves AMPTP Deal

Source: Screen Actors Guild
April 19, 2009

The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) announced today that the tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers has been approved by SAG's National Board of Directors:

The Screen Actors Guild National Board of Directors today voted 53.38 percent to 46.62 percent to approve and recommend to members, new, two-year successor agreements to the 2005 Producer-Screen Actors Guild Codified Basic Agreement and 2005 Screen Actors Guild Television Agreement.

The proposed agreement, covering actors in motion pictures and television delivers 3.5% effective annual increases comprised of a 3% wage increase and a .5% pension and health contribution increase upon ratification, and a 3.5% wage increase in year two.

The board passed the below motion shortly after 4:00 p.m. today:

It was moved and seconded that the National Board directs the Interim National Executive Director to send the tentative agreement between the Producers represented by the AMPTP and the Screen Actors Guild for successor agreements to the 2005 Producer-Screen Actors Guild Codified Basic Agreement and the 2005 Screen Actors Guild Television Agreement to the membership for ratification, with a recommendation from the Board to vote ‘Yes.'
Approved: 53.38% -46.62%

"I urge members to carefully review both the pros and cons in the referendum materials, and exercise their right to vote," said Screen Actors Guild National President Alan Rosenberg.

Interim National Executive Director David White said: "We are pleased that Screen Actors Guild members will soon be voting on a deal for television and motion pictures. We're eager to get our members back to work and to focus now on the challenges ahead, particularly on initiating a comprehensive effort to thoughtfully plan for the future.

"Our negotiating committee, task force and professional staff have worked countless hours on this agreement over the last year. On behalf of the National Board, I thank them for their time, commitment and expertise."

Chief Negotiator John McGuire stated: "This tentative agreement delivers increased contributions to the SAG pension plan, increased minimums, a significant gain in background actor numbers from 50 to 55 over the term of the contract, and it tracks the new media provisions achieved by other entertainment industry unions. The term of the agreement puts SAG in sync with the other unions, and does not include the extended term recently proposed by the AMPTP."

Provisions of the proposed deal include:
• A two-year term of agreement concluding June 30, 2011.
• Effective annual increases comprised of 3.0% in wage increases and .5% in pension contributions upon ratification, and a 3.5% wage increase one year following ratification.
• A new media structure that tracks those achieved by other industry unions, resulting in gains for actors including:
o Jurisdiction on all derivative, made-for new media productions; automatic jurisdiction on all high-budget, original, made-for new media productions; plus jurisdiction on low budget original, new media productions that employee at least 1 covered performer.
o Residuals for exhibition of TV and Theatrical motion pictures on consumer pay platforms (Electronic Sell Through) at a greater percentage than those paid for DVD distribution.
o Residuals for ad-supported streaming of feature films and television programs.
o Residuals for derivative new media programs.
• Additional 5 covered background actors in feature films. From 50 to 53 covered background positions upon ratification of the contract, and from 53 to 55 covered background positions in year 2. Adds 1 covered background position in TV, from 19 to 20, upon ratification.
• Increased compensation for guest star premium from 7.5% to 10%.
• Increased trailer money break from $2,500 to $3,000, or more per week.
• Increased overtime money break for three-day performers from $2,700 to $3,000.

Ratification ballots will be mailed to eligible SAG members in early May, with an expected return date at the end of the month. Tabulation will occur immediately upon the conclusion of balloting.

Bargaining for a successor agreement to the 2005 SAG TV/Theatrical Contract began on April 15, 2008

Synopsis:
The following is from the DVD cover:

"This Recut & Extended Edition is the ultimate 'Sin City' DVD Collection and features a new, never-before-seen extended version of the original motion picture, the original theatrical release with three new commentaries, and extensive brand-new bonus material! Also included, a complete Sin City graphic novel: "The Hard Goodbye." The acclaimed hit from director Robert Rodriguez delivers explosive stories straight from the pages of Frank Miller's hip series of "Sin City" graphic novels ... and stars Bruce Willis, Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Jaime King, Clive Owen, Brittany Murphy, Rosario Dawson, Devon Aoki, Alexis Bledel, Benicio Del Toro, Elijah Wood, Nick Stahl, Michael Madsen, Carla Gugino, and Michael Clarke Duncan."

This version of "Sin City" is unrated, but the theatrical version was rated R for sustained strong stylized violence, nudity and sexual content including dialogue.

The Movie:
Despite being "recut, extended, and unrated", the new version of "Sin City" isn't all that different from the theatrical version. First of all, Robert Rodriguez separates each of the stories into four individual short films. "The Customer is Always Right," "The Hard Goodbye," "The Big Fat Kill," and "That Yellow Bastard" are now four separate movies. Next he adds some additional scenes. The cover says that there's 20 extra minutes, but it certainly didn't seem like that. "The Hard Goodbye" has a scene added where Marv returns to his childhood home to retrieve his gun. While there, his mother steps in and tells him some men came by looking for him. It's yet another scene straight out of the comic. In "That Yellow Bastard," we see that Carla Gugino as Lucille helps Bruce Willis as John Hartigan get out of jail. She offers to help prove his innocence, yet when he continues to state that he's guilty, she belts him across the jaw. Finally, there's a little more of Devon Aoki in "The Big Fat Kill." While none of these scenes add that much to the plot, they will be welcome additions to fans of the "Sin City" comics.

As for the rest of the film, you can see my review of it here.

As you might expect, the Blu-ray Disc version of "Sin City" looks amazing. Any animated film looks fantastic in High Definition, and since "Sin City" is mostly animated, it looks great.

The Extras:
For the Blu-ray Disc version of this film, there are two new bonus features that weren't on the "Recut • Extended • Unrated" DVD set:

Cine-Explore - When you activate this feature, the commentary with Rodriguez and Miller kicks in and as the movie plays, panels from the comic appear on the screen. Green screen footage without effects will also play in another window on the screen, too. It's actually a pretty impressive way to watch the film. This kind of thing wouldn't work with many films, but it's the perfect way to re-watch "Sin City." You can watch an exclusive clip from the feature below!

Kill 'Em Good - This is a Blu-ray video game mixed with an animated version of the comic book. As Marv's story begins, you guide his stolen police car through the streets of the city. Then you throw money at Nancy as she dances. Then you shoot cops at the farm house. I found the controls a bit hard to manage at first, but eventually got the hang of it. Unfortunately there's a learning curve on each level.

Here are the other highlights from the bonus features. These were on a previous release of the DVD, so if you have that, you have all this:

All-New Feature Commentaries – There are two commentaries – one with Robert Rodriguez & Frank Miller and another with Robert Rodriguez & Quentin Tarantino. While it would have been fun to include the actors, too, these guys more than make up for it with lively discussion. And what's better than having the comic creator sit in on the commentary?

An Audio Track Featuring a Recording of the Austin Audience Reaction – If you've already seen the film, it's quite fun to watch it again with the audience reaction. Their applause of the film, laughter at the jokes, and gasps of horror at the violence take the movie viewing experience to another level. And you don't have anybody kicking your seat.

15-Minute Film School with Robert Rodriguez – Rodriguez breaks down a number of the tricks he used to pull off making "Sin City" with a low budget and a little bit of technology. He talks about how he attempted to copy the look of the comic, how he filmed on a small green screen, and some tricks he used to shoot separate actors in the same scene at different times. This is required viewing for aspiring filmmakers.

The Long Take: 14 Uninterrupted Minutes of Tarantino's Segment – Since they shot this movie with digital cameras, they were able to leave the camera running for extended periods of time and through multiple takes. Rodriguez offers some of that raw footage here that was shot during Tarantino's scene with Clive Owen and Benicio Del Toro. You see them play with dialogue, discuss the scene with Tarantino, get their makeup touched up, and more. It's the next best thing to being on the set.

"Sin City Live" Night at Antones – After Bruce Willis finished filming, they went down to a nightclub in Austin and Willis and his band called The Accelerators played a charity concert. Rodriguez used the "Sin City" cameras to record the concert in HD. All the cast and crew were there, but they are barely seen in this music video. Still, it's fun to see Willis sing and play.

10-Minute Cooking School with Robert Rodriguez – Rodriguez shows how to make homemade breakfast tacos. It seems like an odd addition to the DVD, but he says it's a fan favorite. Who am I to argue?

How It Went Down: Convincing Frank Miller to Make the Film – Miller and Rodriguez talk about how they were talked into making the movie. They talk about the initial idea, the test footage that was shot, and more. It's a fun and unique story to hear about the making of the film.

A Hard Top with a Decent Engine: The Cars of "Sin City" – Despite all the CG in the film, they did use some real vintage cars. This featurette discusses how they tracked them all down to match hose in the comics and how they were used.

Trench Coats & Fishnets: The Costumes of "Sin City" – The costumer talks about all the outrageous costumes in the movie. They also discuss how material type was a big consideration in getting it to look right and match the black and white look in the comics.

Making the Monsters: Special Effects Makeup – This featurette highlights the makeup of Marv, Yellow Bastard, and Jack. Again, it's all about matching the comic.

The Movie in High-Speed Green Screen - All Green-Screen Version – Rodriguez actually plays the entire film in fast forward showing only the raw green screen footage. You can view it in about 10 minutes and it really gives you an appreciation for the effects work in the film.

Booze, Broads & Guns: The Props of "Sin City" – This featurette highlights the unique guns, knives, and swords in the film. Interestingly, the swords used in the movie were also used in "Kill Bill."

Special Guest Director: Quentin Tarantino – This featurette discusses Tarantino's involvement in the movie and it shows a ton of behind the scenes footage from his day of shooting.

Sin-Chroni-City Interactive Set-Top Feature – This feature, hosted by Rodriguez, shows all the locations in Basin City, the characters that live there, the chronology, and their interconnection. This will please the comics fans most of all.

The Bottom Line:
If you're a "Sin City" fan, this is the edition that you've been waiting for. Robert Rodriguez again delivers a ton of bonus features that will please both comic fans and aspiring filmmakers alike.

sincityreturns
