Was Beginning the End for Leatherface?

The future is looking bleak for a new Leatherface entry. Over at Platinum Dunes, there appears to be no interest in a new Texas Chainsaw Massacre entry, nor is any interest being felt at Warner Bros./New Line. The company's last outing with the Hewitt family was Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning.

"I think the original rights owners now own those rights," says Dunes' Brad Fuller. "I haven't heard anything for over a year now, but I think they want to go out and make their own Texas Chainsaw. While I used to always hope and pray that we could do another one, I don't feel that anymore."

Co-producer Andrew Form continues: "When we set out to make Friday the 13th, we wanted to do a fun horror film and we really enjoyed doing that. So we're going in that direction. A Nightmare on Elm Street is not that, it's a totally different movie but..."

"But you're not in the basement dismembering people," Fuller says. "It's not a torture movie, something we do not want to do."

Wanted: Nightmare on Elm Street Director

It's all Krueger all of the time for Platinum Dunes. Producers Brad Fuller and Andrew Form spent a good deal of this week taking meetings with potential directors for the upcoming A Nightmare on Elm Street reboot.

"There are some people who are just so excited to maybe getting to do this," Fuller tells ShockTillYouDrop.com. "There were some directors we were talking to who wanted to really make it hardcore, bloody and focus heavily on the pedophilia. We're just now trying to figure out who is the best fit and will give us the scariest movie."

Fuller informs us the screenplay is coming along and that there is "a foundation. We'll probably change some of the dialogue, punch up the kills and the dream sequences but for the most part the foundation is there." The producer adds they're seeking a helmer who can balance reality but carry strong fantastical elements. So, is Marcus Nispel (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th) being considered? "It's been talked about, but I don't know," says Fuller.

Shooting is expected to begin in late April and a search for the new Freddy Krueger has begun. Fuller reveals with palpable glee, "We're getting calls, for the first time in our career, from actors with real caliber who are pursuing that role"

Astute fans who head into the theater to see Friday the 13th (set visit) on February 13th may notice current television spots are featuring footage not in the final cut - obvious signs there will be much to see when the reboot, directed by Marcus Nispel, hits DVD later this year. Co-producer Andrew Form of Platinum Dunes shed some light what fans can expect.

"There will be an extended, unrated cut of the movie that's ten minutes longer," he says, "a couple of deleted scenes and a couple of alternate scenes. There will be an alternate ending as well."

We caught a screening of Friday the 13th last night in Hollywood and will have a review in the near future. Keep it here for plenty of more coverage over the next two weeks!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen director Michael Bay has posted the following on his official Blog about both the Super Bowl spot and the longer teaser trailer coming up:

The Super Bowl spot is coming Sunday in the third Quarter (few minutes into the quarter slot). The spot will be online a few minutes after that - The full length teaser trailer will only be on Friday the Thirteenth. It will not hit the internet until a week later. The Teaser really only teases stuff - I'm holding so much stuff back from the final trailers because I personally hate going to movies where you have seen it all.

We will have both of them for you as soon as they come online, so stay tuned!

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen hits conventional and IMAX theaters on June 26th. The sequel stars Shia LaBeouf, Megan Fox, Josh Duhamel, Tyrese Gibson, Kevin Dunn, Julie White, John Benjamin Hickey, Ramon Rodriguez, Isabel Lucas and John Turturro.

TV scribe Tom Wheeler has been hired to write the "Shrek" spinoff Puss in Boots for DreamWorks Animation, a stand-alone feature foray for the feline assassin/swordsman voiced by Antonio Banderas in the two most recent "Shrek" films.

The Puss in Boots character, originally hired to knock off the grumpy green ogre, debuted in Shrek 2, which is the 10th-highest-grossing movie of all time. He went on to become part of Shrek's entourage.

Chris Miller, who added voices and dialogue to previous "Shrek" installments and co-directed and co-wrote the third movie, wrote an earlier draft of the "Puss" screenplay.

Sylvester Stallone, who is preparing to shoot action-adventure The Expendables, told Extra that he's planning to play John Rambo again.

"Yeah, we are doing another 'Rambo,' but the conflict is whether to do it in America or a foreign country," said Stallone.

Sly last played the role in Lionsgate's January 25, 2008 release Rambo, which earned $113.2 million worldwide. That pic cost $50 million to make.

By the Power of Grayskull! We've Got a Director

January 29, 2009

Variety has confirmed Latino Review's scoop that Warner Bros. and producer Joel Silver have set Kung Fu Panda co-director John Stevenson to make his live action directing debut on Masters of the Universe, a re-imagining of the signature Mattel toy line.

He-Man is a brawny prince who transforms into a warrior who becomes the last hope for a magical land called Eternia, which is being ravaged by technology and the evil Skeletor.

Silver is producing through his Silver Pictures and Mattel's Barry Waldo will be executive producer.

WB acquired the property in 2007, and Justin Marks wrote the first draft of the script based on a story he wrote with Neil Ellice.

The Mattel property became iconic by way of the 1980s cartoon series "He-Man and the Masters of the Universe," and the property was previously turned into a 1987 film starring Dolph Lungdren as He-Man and Frost/Nixon star Frank Langella as the villainous Skeletor.

Stevenson said he made up his mind when he went to Mattel headquarters and was shown into a secret lair that contained the visuals created by the toymaker staff.

"There was this locked bunker that you had to be escorted into," Stevenson said. "It was filled with art, some generated by the Mattel artists, and I looked around, and said, 'I get it.' We started formulating a specific vision for costumes, creatures, architecture, and the creation of a mythology and look for a whole world we'll create."

Resident Evil 4 Heading to Tokyo & Alaska

January 29, 2009

Paul W.S. Anderson has completed his script for the fourth installment of the "Resident Evil" series. An insider told Arrow in the Head today that writing will commence on a second draft.

According to the site, a few other things will be happening in quick succession during this time: Right now they're trying to lock Milla Jovovich so she can reprise her role as Alice, then a director (not Anderson) will be sought and casting will begin. As hinted at the end of Resident Evil: Extinction, the story will shift to Tokyo and some shooting will take place in Toronto (to front for Alaska).

Arrow's got the word on the tone of the script and a few other players said to be involved behind the camera - check out their story here!

Harry Potter Stuntman Seriously Injured

Harry Potter Stuntman Seriously Injured

January 29, 2009

UK's The Daily Mirror reports that Daniel Radcliffe's stunt double suffered a serious injury in a set explosion yesterday for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part I.

The 25-year-old was rehearsing a flying sequence using a harness when he was sent plummeting by the blast, which was part of the stunt. He was conscious after smashing to the ground but told horrified colleagues: "I can't feel my legs."

"He told crew members who went to help him he couldn’t feel anything from the waist down. Everyone is just hoping he makes a good recovery. It has come as a terrible shock," said a source.

Paramedics were called to Leavesden Studios and the stuntman was taken to hospital amid fears he may have been paralysed.

A spokesman for the studio said: "We can confirm a member of the Harry Potter production was injured in an accident. We are awaiting further news. Out of respect for the family we are unable to comment further."

Fox Takes Over Chronicles of Narnia

January 29, 2009

Variety and The L.A. Times are reporting that 20th Century Fox has picked up the option to co-finance Walden Media's The Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn Treader just a month after Disney decided to pass on helping to finance the third film in the series. Budgeting and script issues are being worked out although there's hope that the film will start shooting at the end of summer for a planned holiday 2010 release through the Fox Walden label.

Fox and Walden will split the production and P&A costs for "Dawn Treader," which is projected to have a $140 million budget, down from the $215 million spent on last year's The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian. "Caspian" grossed $419 million worldwide, compared to the $745 million earned by its predecessor "The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe."

As planned, the third film will be directed by Michael Apted with Mark Johnson and original director Andrew Adamson co-producing. Ben Barnes, Skandar Keynes and Georgie Henley will be returning as Prince Caspian, Edmund and Lucy while Will Poulter from Garth Jennings' Son of Rambow will play Eustace Clarence Scrubb.

You can read more details about the production deal and the development of the script, which was penned by Richard LaGravanese over at Variety and at The L.A. Times.

Liam Neeson & Maggie Grace are Taken

Liam Neeson & Maggie Grace are Taken

Source: Edward Douglas
January 28, 2009

The range displayed over the years by actor Liam Neeson has turned him into an acting chameleon who can star in serious dramatic awards-worthy fare like Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List or the biopic Kinsey, but also appear in some of the most notable action franchises like Batman Begins and Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace.

Those two very different sides of the actor have been brought together by French action pioneer Luc Besson in Taken, an action-thriller directed by Besson's former DP Pierre Morel (District B13). In the tense thriller, Neeson plays Bryan Mills, a former special operative whose 17-year-old daughter, played by Maggie Grace (from "Lost"), is kidnapped by a sex traffic ring while vacationing in Paris, forcing him to use all of his skills to get her back before she's lost to him forever.

The movie combines the action that Besson has displayed going back to early films such as La Femme Nikita and The Professional, but it's a little more based in reality than "The Transporter" movies with the tense drama that only an actor of Neeson's caliber can deliver.

ComingSoon.net had a chance to talk on camera with both Neeson and Grace:

Taken opens nationwide on Friday, January 30.

Warner Bros. Rebooting Tomb Raider

Warner Bros. Rebooting Tomb Raider

January 28, 2009

Warners Bros. Pictures and producer Dan Lin (upcoming Sherlock Holmes) are in early development on a a reboot of "Tomb Raider," the popular video game action franchise featuring Lara Croft.

Paramount previously made the two movies based on the game, but the rights have since reverted to Eidos. When Time Warner upped its stake to 19.92% in Eidos in December, films rights to the property were included as part of the deal.

Lin will produce the project via his Lin Pictures while Stephen Gilchrist will co-produce; Ian Livingstone of Eidos will executive produce.

The new project, however, is expected to revamp the character and her mission and bear little resemblance to the original pictures. It will reimagine the origins of the character, her love interest and the main villain.

As an open-writing assignment, the project is still in its nascent stages. An actress who could play the role Angelina Jolie made famous would likely come on after a writer and director are attached.

Fox's Plan for The A-Team Coming Together

Fox's Plan for The A-Team Coming Together

Source: Variety
January 28, 2009

20th Century Fox has assembled a creative team to transform 1980s TV series The A-Team into a summer 2010 film, says Variety.

The studio has set Joe Carnahan to direct and Ridley Scott to produce, with Tony Scott executive producing through their Scott Free banner.

Also producing are Jules Daly and Stephen J. Cannell, the latter of whom created the original TV series.

Carnahan will team with Brian Bloom to polish a script by Skip Woods. The intention is to start production by June for a June 11, 2010, release.

Carnahan and the Scott brothers say they will use the original premise of the series as the template for an action film. In the original, four Vietnam vets convicted of armed robbery escape from military prison and became do-gooder mercenaries.

The Middle East will replace Vietnam as the place the four did their tour of duty, but Carnahan said the origin story is the jumping-off point.

Carnahan has put his Pablo Escobar film Killing Pablo on the back burner. The project was complicated by the bankruptcy filing made by the Yari Film Group.

Next Batman Movie in 2011?

Next Batman Movie in 2011?

Source: Courier-Post
January 26, 2009

New Jersey's Courier-Post talked to Batman Begins and The Dark Knight executive producer Michael Uslan, who expects the third installment of the Christopher Nolan-directed films, starring Christian Bale, to hit theaters in 2011:

Uslan will be onboard as executive producer for the "Dark Knight" sequel, which he estimates will be theaters by 2011. As for the identity of the next round of Batman's supervillains and love interests, Uslan remains tight-lipped. "It's one of those deals where if I told you, I'd have to kill you," he says with a chuckle.

In related news, while The Dark Knight did not receive the Producer of the Year Award at the Producers Guild of America Awards on Saturday (it went to Slumdog Millionaire), the movie did receive awards at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday - Heath Ledger won for Best Supporting Actor and The Dark Knight also won Outstanding Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.

Is the Saw Series Heading for 3-D?

Is the Saw Series Heading for 3-D?

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
January 25, 2009

"3-D" is on the lips of the producing team at Twisted Pictures, the house of horror known for churning out the Saw franchise. And if the future continues to look bright for the Jigsaw legacy (Saw V grossed over $100 million worldwide), you might just see a Saw sequel coming at you in the same technology that made My Bloody Valentine 3D leap off the screen.

At last night's sold-out, energetic Los Angeles screening of Repo! The Genetic Opera, another Twisted production, ShockTillYouDrop.com got to speaking with the producers who are seriously mulling over a Saw 3D. Perhaps not Saw VI but a seventh entry.

With 3-D becoming prevalent in the horror genre this year, it might be advantageous to consider doing part six in 3-D, but with an October 23rd release date looming and pre-production beginning soon - could Twisted make it work? If there was ever a time to freshen up this ongoing horror franchise, this is it. Imagine seeing Jigsaw's devices in your face...

Just to make clear, nothing is set in stone, but the 3-D ideas are being kicked around. What do you think? Comment below!

Dakota Fanning has confirmed that she is in talks to star in New Moon, the follow-up to last year's Twilight. The actress tells ShockTillYouDrop.com: "I really hope that works out. I think it's too soon to tell right now, but it'd be really fun. I'm a huge fan."

Fanning is said to be circling the part of Jane, a deadly Italian vampire.

In New Moon, Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) is devastated by the abrupt departure of her vampire love, Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) but her spirit is rekindled by her growing friendship with the irresistible Jacob Black. FanBoys Finally Gets Released?

Fanboys will be getting what is known as a “Limited Platform Release.” It will open in 8 large cities on about 40 screens. If it has a good opening weekend, with a high per-screen average, then the studio will widen the release, adding more screens in more cities in the weeks that follow.

This isn’t the wide release I’d hoped for, but at this point I’m just happy that it’s finally coming out and that (some) fans will finally be able to see it at their local cinema.
If you live in one of these 8 cities, please gather up your geek posse and go see Fanboys on opening weekend (February 6-8), to help the movie reach more cities so that more fans can see it:

1) New York – 10 screens (including AMC 34th St)
2) Los Angeles – 10 screens (including Mann Chinese 6)
3) Chicago – 3 screens
4) Philadelphia – 5 screens
5) San Francisco – 6 screens
6) Seattle – 3 screens
7) Houston – 3 screens
8) Austin - 1 screen (Alamo Drafthouse)

Moviegoer Shoots Man for Talking During Film

Moviegoer Shoots Man for Talking During Film

KTLA News

December 29, 2008

PHILADELPHIA -- A Philadelphia man irked by a fellow movie patron's talking is facing charges of attempted murder after he allegedly shot the chatty moviegoer.

James Joseph Cialella Jr., 29, allegedly became irate with a man who was talking to his son during a Christmas night screening of "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button."

Cialella apparently told the man to be quiet, and then threw his popcorn at the man's son.

Cialella and the man exchanged some words and Cialella then got out of his seat, according to reports. The man, whose identity was not released, said he got up from his seat to protect his son, and Cialella then shot him in the arm with a .380-caliber gun.

Patrons ran from the movie theater, and Cialella reportedly went back to his seat and resumed watching the movie -- until police showed up to arrest him on charges of attempted murder, aggravated assault and weapons violations.

Phila. man shot because family talked during movie

A South Philadelphia man enraged because a father and son were talking during a Christmas showing of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button took care of the situation when he pulled a .380-caliber gun and shot the father, police said.

James Joseph Cialella Jr., 29, of the 1900 block of Hollywood Street is charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, and weapons violations.

"It's truly frightening when you see something like this evolve into such violence," said police spokesman Lt. Frank Vanore.

Police were called to the Riverview Theatre in the 1400 block of Columbus Boulevard about 9:30 p.m. where the gunshot victim, a Philadelphia man who was not identified, told police a man sitting near him told his family to be quiet and threw popcorn at his son.

After exchanging words, Vanore said Cialella allegedly got out of his seat to confront the family when the father got up to protect them. That's when the victim was shot once in the left arm, sending others in the theatre running to safety.

Cialella then sat down to watch the movie. Police arrived a short time later and arrested Cialella and confiscated his weapon, Vanore said.

School seeks to forfeit 100-0 win

School seeks to forfeit 100-0 win

DALLAS -- A Texas high school girls basketball team on the winning end of a 100-0 game has a case of blowout remorse.

Now officials from The Covenant School say they are trying to do the right thing by seeking a forfeit and apologizing for the margin of victory.

Samantha Peloza grabs a rebound in practice a week after their 100-0 win.
"It is shameful and an embarrassment that this happened," Kyle Queal, the head of the school, said in a statement, adding the forfeit was requested because "a victory without honor is a great loss."

The private Christian school defeated Dallas Academy last week. Covenant was up 59-0 at halftime.

A parent who attended the game told The Associated Press that Covenant continued to make 3-pointers -- even in the fourth quarter. She praised the Covenant players but said spectators and an assistant coach were cheering wildly as their team edged closer to 100 points.

"I think the bad judgment was in the full-court press and the 3-point shots," said Renee Peloza, whose daughter plays for Dallas Academy. "At some point, they should have backed off."

Dallas Academy coach Jeremy Civello told The Dallas Morning News that the game turned into a "layup drill," with the opposing team's guards waiting to steal the ball and drive to the basket. Covenant scored 12 points in the fourth quarter and "finally eased up when they got to 100 with about four minutes left," he said.

Dallas Academy has eight girls on its varsity team and about 20 girls in its high school. It is winless over the last four seasons. The academy boasts of its small class sizes and specializes in teaching students struggling with "learning differences," such as short attention spans or dyslexia.

There is no mercy rule in girls basketball that shortens the game or permits the clock to continue running when scores become lopsided. There is, however, "a golden rule" that should have applied in this contest, said Edd Burleson, the director of the Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools. Both schools are members of this association, which oversees private school athletics in Texas.

"On a personal note, I told the coach of the losing team how much I admire their girls for continuing to compete against all odds," Burleson said. "They showed much more character than the coach that allowed that score to get out of hand. It's up to the coach to control the outcome."

In the statement on the Covenant Web site, Queal said the game "does not reflect a Christ-like and honorable approach to competition. We humbly apologize for our actions and seek the forgiveness of Dallas Academy, TAPPS and our community."

Covenant coach Micah Grimes did not immediately respond to a message left by The Associated Press on Thursday.

Queal said school officials met with Dallas Academy officials to apologize and praised "each member of the Dallas Academy Varsity Girls Basketball team for their strength, composure and fortitude in a game in which they clearly emerged the winner."

Civello said he appreciated the gesture and has accepted the apology "with no ill feelings."

At a shootaround Thursday, several Dallas Academy players said they were frustrated during the game but felt it was a learning opportunity. They also said they are excited about some of the attention they are receiving from the loss, including an invitation from Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban to see an NBA game from his suite.

"Even if you are losing, you might as well keep playing," said Shelby Hyatt, a freshman on the team. "Keep trying, and it's going to be OK."

Peloza said the coach and other parents praised the Dallas Academy girls afterward for limiting Covenant to 12 points in the fourth quarter. She added that neither her daughter nor her teammates seemed to dwell on the loss.

"Somewhere during that game they got caught up in the moment," Peloza said of the Covenant players, fans and coaches. "Our girls just moved on. That's the happy part of the story."

Where Does Underworld Turn Now?

Where Does Underworld Turn Now?

Source:Ryan Rotten, Managing Editor
January 23, 2009

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans propels fans of the franchise way back before the events of the first two entries to establish the friction between the vampire race and the Lycans. It not only provides a modicum of closure to some unanswered questions but it also fulfills the vision of Len Wiseman, co-creator and director of the previous films.

ShockTillYouDrop.com caught up to Wiseman at the red carpet premiere of the new film (on which he serves as producer) tonight to ask...where does Underworld go now? One could say the narrative can push forward following the events after Underworld: Evolution. Or, Wiseman and company could play around in the years between Lycans and the first picture.

"We'll see what happens with this one," Wiseman says. "They're now a bit more open. There was always a hope that there were three films we could tell - so we've completed that trilogy we've talked about. There are many places we can go. If people are willing to go back, they're willing to go forward."

Well, that sounds like we might see more of Selene and Michael. "I'm kind of flirting with ideas of what would take place in the future. I'm just glad people are accepting that we can jump around in the time line and people are interested. Hopefully they'll be willing to accept different stories because the characters are there and they're immortal. It would be fun to go forward again."

Underworld: Rise of the Lycans opens in theaters tomorrow.

A friendly reminder to all the fans of the The Dark Knight that the movie returns to theaters on Friday. Here is the official IMAX press release and worldwide locations:

IMAX Corporation and Warner Bros. Pictures today announced that the box office smash hit The Dark Knight, which has grossed more than $997 million at the worldwide box office since its release on July 18th, 2008, will return to IMAX® theatres for an encore presentation. Starting January 23rd, the film will open in 143 IMAX screens domestically, and 29 screens internationally. Last year the film opened day and date in 94 domestic and 15 international IMAX theatres and went on to become the highest grossing live-action Hollywood IMAX release, generating $63 million as it continued to be released throughout the IMAX network.

The Dark Knight: The IMAX Experience features six sequences filmed with IMAX cameras, which marks the first time ever that a major feature film has been even partially shot using IMAX cameras.

"The Dark Knight is a crowning achievement in every sense of the word," said Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "We want to provide one more opportunity for moviegoers to experience it on the big screen as it was meant to be seen. We're also very excited to give more fans in new markets an opportunity to experience the film in this special way, thanks to the continued rapid growth of the IMAX theatre network."

"As audiences discovered over the summer, The Dark Knight is not only a phenomenal film, but an extraordinarily unique experience in IMAX," said Veronika Kwan-Rubinek, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. "With the multitude of accolades it has received this season, we wanted to bring this amazing film back to theaters to give audiences another chance to see it on the big screen and in the expanded IMAX locations around the globe."

"We are grateful to Chris Nolan and Warner Bros Pictures for incorporating IMAX into such a wonderful cinematic masterpiece, and we're honored to bring it back to our theatres," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President of IMAX Filmed Entertainment. "The anticipation surrounding the initial IMAX release reached beyond the markets where we had IMAX theatres and we're delighted that moviegoers in many of those markets will now have the chance to Experience it in IMAX."

One of the most celebrated and successful films of this or any year, The Dark Knight has been hailed by both critics and audiences since its original release last July. The film garnered widespread acclaim for its artistic and technical achievements, culminating with the film being named on more than 150 critics' lists of the year's top-ten films.

In addition, the filmmakers behind The Dark Knight have been honored by their peers, with Christopher Nolan receiving a Directors Guild of America Award nomination; producers Nolan, Charles Roven and Emma Thomas garnering a Producers Guild Award nomination; and a Writers Guild of America Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay going to Chris Nolan, Jonathan Nolan and David S. Goyer. Cast member Heath Ledger received a Screen Actors Guild Award nomination, and has also won a Golden Globe, Critics' Choice Award and numerous other critics groups' awards for Best Supporting Actor.

The Dark Knight also won the Critics' Choice Award for Best Action Film, and swept the People's Choice Awards in five categories, including Favorite Movie and Favorite Cast.
