George Lucas on a Fifth Indiana Jones

George Lucas on a Fifth Indiana Jones

With Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull having earned a massive $743.7 million worldwide (#27 on the all-time worldwide list), The Sunday Times asked George Lucas if he, Steven Spielberg and Harrison Ford would be up for a fifth film:

"We were hoping for box-office figures like that, which is, ultimately, with inflation, what the others have done, within 10%," Lucas explains. "So, we squeaked up there. Really, though, it was a challenge getting the story together and getting everybody to agree on it. Indiana Jones only becomes complicated when you have another two people saying 'I want it this way' and 'I want it that way', whereas, when I first did Jones, I just said, 'We'll do it this way' — and that was much easier. But now I have to accommodate everybody, because they are all big, successful guys, too, so it's a little hard on a practical level.

"If I can come up with another idea that they like, we'll do another. Really, with the last one, Steven wasn't that enthusiastic. I was trying to persuade him. But now Steve is more amenable to doing another one. Yet we still have the issues about the direction we'd like to take. I'm in the future; Steven's in the past. He's trying to drag it back to the way they were, I'm trying to push it to a whole different place. So, still we have a sort of tension. This recent one came out of that. It's kind of a hybrid of our own two ideas, so we'll see where we are able to take the next one."

The Dark Knight Reaches a Record $314.2M in 10 Days!

The Dark Knight Reaches a Record $314.2M in 10 Days!

July 27, 2008

The ComingSoon.net Box Office Report has been updated with studio estimates for the weekend. Be sure to check back on Monday for the final figures based on actual box office.

Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight earned an estimated $75.6 million from 4,366 theaters in its second weekend, surpassing Shrek 2's $72.2 million for biggest second weekend ever. Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up has reached $314.2 million in just 10 days, another record. Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest held the previous record in the amount of days it took to cross the $300 million mark - it needed 16 days to do so. On Monday, The Dark Knight will surpass Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to become the biggest movie of 2008 domestically. It is already up to #23 on the all-time domestic blockbuster list and has a good shot at surpassing Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope's $460.998 million (not counting inflation) to become the second-biggest domestic earner of all-time, trailing only Titanic's $600.788 million. The Dark Knight, budgeted at $185 million, stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman.

Columbia Pictures' Step Brothers opened in second place with a strong $30 million from 3,094 theaters. The Adam McKay-directed comedy, starring Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Richard Jenkins and Mary Steenburgen, averaged $9,696 per theater. The movie cost about $65 million to make.

Universal Pictures' Mamma Mia! dropped one spot to third and lost only 35.6% in ticket sales from its first weekend. The musical, carrying a budget of $52 million, added $17.9 million and has pushed its total to $62.7 million in two weeks.

20th Century Fox's The X-Files: I Want to Believe failed to pull in moviegoers its first weekend as it collected just $10.2 million from 3,185 theaters, according to estimates. The Chris Carter-directed film, starring David Duchovny, Gillian Anderson, Xzibit, Amanda Peet and Billy Connolly, averaged $3,202 per location. One thing going for it is that it had a budget of just $30 million, making the risk for the studio minimal.

Warner Bros./New Line's Journey to the Center of the Earth rounded out the top five with $9.4 million and has earned $60.2 million in three weeks. The family adventure was made for $60 million.

Columbia Pictures' Hancock took in $8.2 million in its fourth weekend in sixth place, sending the $150 million Will Smith superhero film over the $200 million mark with $206.4 million.

In seventh, Disney/Pixar's WALL•E earned $6.3 million and has collected $195 million after five weeks. The animated film cost the studio $180 million to make.

Eighth place belonged to Universal's Hellboy II: The Golden Army, which made $4.9 million in its third weekend for a total of $65.9 million, followed by Fox's Space Chimps in ninth which made $4.4 million and has earned $16 million in two weeks.

Adult Swim Announces Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II!

Adult Swim Announces Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II!

Source: Adult Swim
July 23, 2008

Adult Swim's "Robot Chicken" travels back to a galaxy far, far away to create a second, all-new "Star Wars"-themed special. Premiering November 16 at 11:30 p.m. (ET/PT), "Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II" combines the satirical sensibilities of Seth Green and Matthew Senreich's (Stoopid Monkey Productions) Emmy-winning "Robot Chicken" with the unforgettable moments and favorite characters of the "Star Wars" universe. The special, to be directed by Green, is a follow-up to last year's "Robot Chicken: Star Wars," which was nominated for an Emmy last week. Both specials and the "Robot Chicken" series are created in conjunction with ShadowMachine Films’ Alex Bulkley and Corey Campononico.

"We're thrilled to get to make 'Episode II;' it doesn't even seem real—getting to make 'Star Wars' twice! We're so excited and bursting with joy," says co-creator Seth Green.

"With this second special, we knew we had to do something a bit different, something more," says co-creator Matt Senreich. "With that in mind, we decided to focus on the bounty hunters a bit and explore their stories. It's a geek-fest for us all."

"Robot Chicken: Star wars Episode II" gives "Star Wars" an entirely different attitude as it transforms the galaxy into the stop-motion animated world that is the hallmark of "Robot Chicken." The special will feature original "Star Wars" lead actress Carrie Fisher reprising her role as Princess Leia and Billy Dee Williams as Lando Calrissian. From the first special, Green and Senreich have secured Ahmed Best to return as Jar Jar Binks, Seth MacFarlane as Emperor Palpatine, Breckin Meyer as Admiral Ackbar and Boba Fett, Conan O'Brien as Zuckuss and Donald Faison. Green won this year's Annie Award for directing the first special and will voice numerous characters, including Ponda Baba in "Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II." Andy Richter also joins the voice talent cast.

Today's announcement comes on the heels of the bonus-filled DVD release of the first special, "Robot Chicken: Star Wars," which hit stores July 22.

"Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II" is created and executive produced by Green and Senreich under their own Stoopid Monkey Productions, in conjunction with Alex Bulkley and Corey Campodonico's ShadowMachine Films. The duo also executive produce, write and direct the series, with Green providing many of the voices in the special and the series. Six all-new episodes of the "Robot Chicken" series begin airing August 31. The special is written by Green, Senreich, series head writers Tom Root and Douglas Goldstein and the "Robot Chicken" writing staff.

Francis Lawrence Confirms Legend Prequel

Francis Lawrence Confirms Legend Prequel

Source:Edward Douglas
July 26, 2008

Last year, Will Smith starred in an update of Richard Matheson's future shock novel I Am Novel, which became the second-biggest non-sequel of 2007, and ever since then, there's been a lot of rumors and speculation and curiosity whether Warner Bros. would try to do some kind of prequel or sequel to it. (Note: If you haven't seen it or read the book, the next sentence will probably spoil both.) A prequel would be the most obvious because it would mean that Will Smith could return as Dr. Robert Neville, and we'd be able to see more of the time in between the virus being unleashed in New York and where the first movie picks up the story.

Francis Lawrence was at Comic-Con International to talk about the new NBC series "Kings" for which he directed the pilot and the first couple of episodes, and we had a chance to ask him a few questions about the rumor about a prequel, which he confirmed he would definitely be involved with. "Yes, yes, absolutely, we're actually trying to crack that. We're trying to figure out some ideas for it, but yes, it would be a prequel." He did confirm that Will Smith, who's done a couple of sequels in his career, would definitely be into doing more with the character.

The pilot for "Kings" has a lot of great aerial shots of New York City, which is doubling for the city of Shiloh, and talking about that lead to us talking about how it was portrayed in Legend. "Akiva and I really wanted to do 'Legend' in New York, because it's such an iconic city and it's just more striking to see it abandoned than Los Angeles, 'cause honestly, parts of Los Angeles can look abandoned in the middle of the day."

We asked him whether he'd have go through the same things in creating an abandoned New York as he did for I Am Legend and whether it would be easier for a prequel, having already figured out how to do it. "Well, even as we went through them with the movie itself, it got easier. The first time you got out there and shut down 6th Avenue, it's like, 'How are we going to do this day after day after day?' but by the end, it's just like you know how to do it. You got the P.A.'s who know how to shut it down, how to let the traffic through in between set-ups and you just sort of get the routine down, so that's not the issue."

That led directly into Lawrence sharing some interesting ideas that might go into making the proposed prequel: "In the prequel, it's slightly different because it's earlier. We were three years later so we did a lot of research into the way nature would have sort of overtaken the city, with the cracks in the streets and the weeds, so if it's just back earlier, it'll be slightly different so the approach will be different. We're not positive of the time of the year, because if you go in winter, you can do some entirely different kinds of things."

As far as getting Richard Matheson's blessing on this prequel, Lawrence commented, "I'm sure we'll definitely keep him involved in the prequel just in terms of updating him and inviting him to read the script and see what he has to say. Matheson was very happy (with the first movie). It was a great moment when we showed him the movie. He had read the script and I invited him when we were done to see the movie and he brought his family, and I called him when we were on the international junket in Japan and I was really nervous, because it's an adaptation and it's different, and he knew along the way, it's Richard Matheson. He really loved it and I had this great letter from him about it."

As far as some of the other things on Lawrence's slate, he told us, "There's something on my IMDb page called 'Eddie Dickens and the Awful End,' which is not happening. That was an animated project that I was going to do alongside with 'Legend' and that we sort of decided with the studio not to do. Then there's a Disney thing called 'Snow and the 7' that I'm still working on which is a modern retelling of the Snow White story." He said that it would be a family movie in the sense of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. "It's in that kind of a vein. It's 19th Century China, a British girl is discovering who she really is, and it's a great action-adventure story. That one's a ways away but we got this great writer in and we're working on the script. This great world and great ideas."

Look for more with Lawrence and "Kings" creator Michael Green (former co-executive producer of "Heroes") over on ComingSoon.net.

Comic-Con Feels the Max Payne

Comic-Con Feels the Max Payne

Source: Edward Douglas
July 26, 2008

20th Century Fox kicked off Comic-Con's famed Hall H programming with a wallop, first with footage from the upcoming remake of The Day the Earth Stood Still, then with the world's first look at the new Max Payne movie starring Mark Wahlberg.

They started things off with dark, shadowy footage that evoked the same gritty feel of the video game as we see a figure walk into a building and up some stairs carrying a handgun. The camera closes in to show that it's Mark Walberg as police officer Max Payne, as he enters a dark apartment calling for someone named "Alex." He slowly walks through the apartment and we see his view of the dark halls, and we catch a glimpse of a dead body on the ground at the end of the hallway (I'm guessing that's Alex) and the camera closes in on his head to show that his throat has been cut. As Payne approaches, he's violently attacked and knocked to the ground, pulled through the pull of blood on the floor and fights with his assailant. He continues to fight and he drags himself across the floor that's covered with glass. The entire sequence looked a lot like the video game with lots of close-ups of various bits of the action tightly edited together.

The lights came up to screams as Wahlberg himself was there, along with director John Moore (The Omen, Behind Enemy Lines, Mila Kunis who plays Mona Sax, and Chris Bridges aka Ludacris, who plays internal affairs agent Jim Bravura.

Mark Wahlberg was excited to be there, comparing the reception to doing a concert in Japan, where everyone cheers even if you don't really say anything. "Now I know why the New Kids wanted to go back," he joked. "It feels good. Makes me all warm in the pants." This got huge laughs and applause from the audience.

"I read the script, and after 'Invincible,' 'The Happening' and 'The Lovely Bones,' I wanted to kick some ass again," Wahlberg said when asked why he decided to take on the video game role. "I got an opportunity to do it in a way where I did more than I got to do in 'The Departed' and movies like 'Four Brothers' and 'Fear,'" he continued. "This is those characters times ten. The guy's driven by emotion, so people are going to understand why he's so committed to cleaning the streets of the scum of the earth. I feel like with my street credibility and my arrest record, I was credible enough to play this role and make people feel like they're going to get their money's worth when they saw it. I think they will, because John really let me push it and again, it's not a one-note performance. He really pushes the envelope so I'm excited for you guys to see it."

Wahlberg talked a bit more about the character before they showed another clip: "This guy is really one of the happiest guys in the world. He's got a beautiful wife and a beautiful child and that's taken away from him and once that's gone, he doesn't really see much more hope for the world. He gives up on hope and humanity and it's a dark, ugly world that Max lives and operates in and I think people are going to be really satisfied when they see the havoc that he wreaks on the evil in the world."

The second clip started with Max Payne walking through the subway (the "Roscoe Street" station, in case you were interested in details) with the sound of a loud watch ticking. He walks by three sleazy-looking derelicts sitting on the bench, and as he passes, they glare at him, before getting up to follow behind him. Payne enters into the station's men's room and takes off his watch, placing it on the sink, and a few seconds later, the three guys follow him in, and the lead guy comments, "Yo homey, that's a really nice watch. Reminds me of one I lost."

"You didn't lose it," Payne responds. "I found it on 128th a few hours ago. Ask Doug, he was there with you." (Doug is the nervous redhead who's standing just to the right of the main guy.)

"Are you following us?" Doug asks.

"No," Payne says coldly. "I'm only following you."

Payne opens his coat to show his badge and the thug asks, "Hell, no. Are you a cop or something?"

"Not tonight," Payne responds and takes his badge off.

"Well, that's too bad, now go get my watch!" yells the thug while still holding a gun on Payne.

"Yeah, go get his watch," Payne agrees.

Doug nervously moves forward but when he reaches for the watch on the sink, it drops to the floor and Max pounces, smashing one guy's face into the sink and a gunfight ensues, Payne drops his empty gun into the sink and pulls out another one. One of the guys runs out of the bathroom and jumps down into the subway tracks to run away. The other guy jumps under the stalls, and Max starts blasting the doors of the stalls open one at a time while the guy scrambles underneath them until he's finally cornered in the final stall. Payne confronts Doug and holds a picture of a woman right up to Doug's face. "Open your eyes now! Have you ever seen this woman?"

There was a little bit more with the cast talking about the movie, Kunis claiming she learned how to take apart and put together guns, learned how to kick ass in high heels and had weapons training. "I got to beat Mark up," she beamed.

Mark gave great lip service to Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, saying that his acting really impressed him, coming from the world of music and being skeptical of musicians who try to act, saying that they're usually doing it to boost their music career, but he's "taken on a role that's written for an actor and I think he did an outstanding job." (Someone joked that the character was originally written for Robert Downey Jr., referring to his character in Tropic Thunder.) Bridges' infernal affairs officer is described as a "really noble character, one who's more top of things than anyone else in the movie," and Bridges added of his character, "He's on Max Payne's heels the entire movie, and everyone on the force is afraid of the guy because he's onto everyone."

John Moore used a new digital camera system for the movie called a Phantom, a digital hard drive that can shoot up 1,000 frames per second in order to slow down the motion to recreate the bullet time from the video games. "I'm no John Woo and no Wachowski Brothers, so we thought that 'The Matrix' and John Woo had done that technique extremely well, so we weren't going to try to do an imitation of that, so we had to come up with our technique. We employed this new camera and I think we got some exciting results, which you'll see in the movie." Moore had also come up with a half-clever, half-cheesy tagline for the movie, which was "This isn't minimum pain, this isn't medium pain, this is Max Payne." (Who knows if 20th Century Fox might actually use that in the advertising.)

They ended the panel by showing an extended clip reel of footage cut together especially for Comic-Con, which opened with a black and white 20th Century Fox logo that turns dark red. We see a body floating in the water, that of Payne, and you hear his gritty noir-inspired first person voiceover which starts, "There's an army of bodies under this river... criminals" and it talks about how when they drain the river they'll find him at the bottom with the rest of them, and the voicover says how he can feel the bodies reaching up to pull him down and welcome them as one of their own, as the camera pulls back to show the bodies floating beneath his. The camera then closes back in on the face of the as his eyes open with the line "It was an easy mistake to make." The opening bars of Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" kicks in and we got to see a lot of quick-cut images of Wahlberg's Max Payne in action, lots of shooting and explosions, and a couple shots of the sexy Mila Kunis undressing, as well as an extended gunfight sequence between Max Payne and over a dozen guys in SWAT outfits in a large office with bullets flying everywhere, then Payne leaped forward and crashed through a door to escape. It was a really well-edited and tight reel ending with Wahlberg's back to the cameras, as he arches backwards, flipping over as he fires a shotgun straight into the camera.

Having seen this footage and that for Lionsgate's Punisher: War Zone (see our description here, there may be a real battle to see which movie is the most violent and stylish crime thriller of the fall, and Max Payne will have some more modern noir company when Frank Miller's The Spirit opens later in December. (You can read about that Comic-Con panel here.) If you're into the "Max Payne" video games or just love violent gun-frenzied action flicks, you should have more than enough to keep you smiling this fall.

Max Payne opens on October 17.

The Dark Knight Adds $23.2 Million on Friday

The Dark Knight Adds $23.2 Million on Friday

Source: Box Office Mojo
July 26, 2008

Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight added $23.2 million on Friday to bring its eight-day total to a record $261.8 million. Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up earned an impressive $18.4 million on Wednesday and $16.5 million on Thursday as well.

The massive hit for the studio is way ahead of the previous eight-day record holder, Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, which had collected $214.6 million after the same amount of days. The Dark Knight could cross the $300 million mark in 10 days, faster than current record holder "Dead Man's Chest," which did it in 16 days. The movie will also pass up Iron Man and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in a matter of days to become the top grossing film of 2008, domestically.

The Dark Knight is already up to 39th on the all-time domestic blockbuster list. We still don't have any more international numbers except for the initial $41.3 million it earned last weekend, but that should change Sunday.

Also on Friday, Columbia Pictures' new comedy Step Brothers, starring Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly, earned a strong $11.8 million from 3,094 theaters in its first day.

It was followed in third by Universal's musical Mamma Mia! with $5.5 million. The movie has collected $50.4 million in eight days.

Fox's The X-Files: I Want to Believe bombed out of the gate, however, as the new movie only took in $4 million from 3,185 theaters its first day.

Stay tuned for the full weekend estimates tomorrow!

Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, who wrote Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle and Harold & Kumar Escape From Guantanamo Bay and directed the latter, will return to write and direct a third installment for Mandate Pictures.

Greg Shapiro will return as producer. Variety says the storyline is being kept under wraps.

Stars John Cho and Kal Penn are expected to reprise their roles as the ganja-loving duo because Mandate has options on the actors for the third installment.

New Line, which was folded into Warner Bros. in February, distributed the first two films. Warners will likely distribute the third installment.

Saw V Panel, Watch the Teaser Trailer!

Saw V Panel, Watch the Teaser Trailer!

Source: ShockTillYouDrop.com
July 24, 2008

Shock is currently sitting in the San Diego Comic-Con panel for Saw V, here are the highlights.

• Intros all around with Marc Burg, Oren Koules, David Hackl, Tobin Bell, Betsey Russell, Costas Mandylor, Julie Benz, Scott Patterson, Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton.

• Burg jokes that the footage they're about to show will appear on YouTube.

• Oren: They've gotten lucky with getting great stories to keep it going, a great team makes it feel like home to head to Toronto every spring and turn the films out in the fall.

• Clip is about to be shown... Oren: This is the fourth straight year they've shown a clip. First look at a trap!

• Teaser trailer was shown instead. Heavy religious influence beginning with the words: "His message is rightious..." Between this, we see Patterson - alive and well - his head caught in a glass box. Darkness all around. We see him first in the dark as just a small light. Through the teaser we zoom in on his face until he wakes up terrified.

• As always, Betsey Russell says she's "sworn to secrecy."

• Patterson: "That was me in the box. I haven't seen that before." The journey of his character of Strohm has to be kept a mystery (he doesn't want to give away any spoilers).

• Patterson: Bell pushed him into digging deeper into what Strohm could be.

• Benz: For her, she immediately responded to joining the sequel. It allowed the crew to laugh at her because she was a newbie and she was constantly scared being in the film. Had nightmares throughout the shooting.

• Patterson: The trap we saw took all day to shoot. He has never been that frightened shooting something. One portion of the trap - he thought he could handle it - but on the first take, he was hyperventilating and going into shock.

• Hackl explained the trap to him to psyche Patterson up, but he was still nervous to get the actor into it. "There was no way we could've done it with visual FX," they had to do it real.

• Patterson: "My heart is racing talking about it, leave me alone!" he jokes.

Phoenix Pictures' Chairman and CEO Mike Medavoy said: "After making the first 'RoboCop' at Orion more than 20 years ago, I'm thrilled to be helping to return this character to the screen with our partners at MGM and through the eyes of Darren Aronofsky and David Self."

Phoenix co-presidents Brad Fischer and David Thwaites added: "With a filmmaker of Darren Aronofsky's vision and imagination and a writer of David Self's caliber, we are poised to bring to the screen an entertaining and provocative film, which will now be under the creative guidance of two of the best storytellers working in our industry today."

The original RoboCop, which premiered in 1987, was "part man, part machine and all cop." The original film was nominated for two Academy Awards -- Best Film Editing and Best Sound.

The Max Payne Press Conference

Max Payne, a video game adaptation from 20th Century Fox due later this year, will have elements of both the original game and its sequel, according to director John Moore. Moore told the press at Comic-Con on Thursday that essential elements to the story were taken from the "Max Payne" sequel, but the intent was never to take both games and mash them into one movie.

"Max can't rest until he finds the third killer (of his wife and child)," said Moore. "I believe he does want to find him and then rest. You get the sense throughout the film that once Max gets this third guy, he's done. But just at the end of the film he realizes that he wouldn't be doing his wife and child, so he wants to live on."

Max Payne stars Mark Wahlberg as Max, Mila Kundis as Mona Sax and Ludicris as Jim Bravura.

Wahlberg was hesitant to do the film after he learned it was based on a video game, but after reading the script and coming off of The Happening and The Lovely Bones, he said he was ready to crack some skulls.

"I love playing this character, especially after playing a science teacher and playing an accountant," said Wahlberg. "It's a nice change of pace."

Moore said that one of his main goals with Mark and Max Payne was to build a character that people would reference, citing early Steve McQueen and Clint Eastwood's Harry Callahan. Moore also said he drew inspiration from Lee Marvin's character in Point Blank and purposefully impersonated his swagger in at least one scene in the film.

Wahlberg confessed he did not do many of the stunts in the film, laughingly referring to the 'three guys that look just like him' eager to get in there.

This was Mila Kundis' first turn in an action film and she said she was excited to learn how to use the guns and batons her character employed.

"It was awesome," said Kundis. "I've never done anything with action. I can barely walk without tripping. I never shot a gun, but now I can take one apart and put it together."

Max Payne is due in theaters on October 17.

New Line Cinema has made a deal with "Hairspray" creator John Waters to write a treatment for a sequel to summer 2007's hit musical feature, reports Variety.

Planning to return are director/choreographer Adam Shankman, producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron and Tony-winning songwriters Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who will write new songs for the film.

No cast has been engaged yet, and none of the stars of Hairspray had sequel options. But the studio hopes to reunite the original cast in a film that will be ready for release by Warner Bros. in mid-July 2010.

The first film starred John Travolta, Christopher Walken and Nikki Blonsky as well as Zac Efron, Queen Latifah, Michelle Pfeiffer, James Marsden, Amanda Bynes, Elijah Kelley and Allison Janney.

Aim is to pick up the Baltimore saga of the Turnblad family after the resolution of the first film, which was set in 1962.

Estelle Getty, the diminutive actress who spent 40 years struggling for success before landing a role of a lifetime in 1985 as the sarcastic octogenarian Sophia on TV's "The Golden Girls," has died. She was 84.

Getty, who suffered from advanced dementia, died at about 5:30 a.m. Tuesday at her Hollywood Boulevard home, said her son, Carl Gettleman of Santa Monica.

"She was loved throughout the world in six continents, and if they loved sitcoms in Antarctica she would have been loved on seven continents," her son said. "She was one of the most talented comedic actresses who ever lived."

Director McG Talks Terminator Salvation

Director McG Talks Terminator Salvation

Source: Official Blog
July 21, 2008

Terminator Salvation director McG has updated the official production Blog for the May 22, 2009 release with the following message:

We are half way through filming. Our teaser is in theaters and playing before The Dark Knight.

You will see that this is a movie inspired by the first films, but is a true new beginning in that it takes place in the future.

All three Terminator films took place present day, with Terminators traveling back in time to attack. This picture takes place after Judgment Day. It happened. Everything is gone. The story of the movie is the "brink moment" Reese always talked about.

From a technical perspective, we have set out to achieve a completely new visual style that hasn't been seen before. We're shooting the film on color stock but are using a method inspired by the Oz process which was developed at Technicolor by Mike Zacharia and Bob Olson. Basically we are adding three times as much silver. It creates a surreal texture that is in keeping with the notion of the entire picture - feeling detached from the world we know today.

Every morning and every night Christian and I work on the story. Sam's contribution has been excellent. We are committed to putting the story and character first and then supplementing that with action and visual effects. It is our intention to make a film on a large scale with the nuance and subtext of a high quality independent picture.

The richness of the story is really coming out now. It's a Prometheus tale really, how creating life creates real responsibility - and if left unchecked, can be our undoing.

The entire crew takes the making of this film very seriously. I made a point of hiring key personnel that are passionate about getting this right. Everyone is well versed in the mythology.

Comicon is this weekend. I look forward to sharing the film with the passionate.

The Dark Knight's Final Tally? $158.4 Million!

The Dark Knight's Final Tally? $158.4 Million!

Source: The Hollywood Reporter, Variety
July 21, 2008

On Sunday, Warner Bros. Pictures estimated that The Dark Knight had earned $155.3 million its opening weekend. Turns out, that was low! The final figures show that Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up took in a record-breaking $158.4 million over the Friday-to-Sunday frame, easily beating the $151.1 million opening of Spider-Man 3 in May 2007.

One of the big reasons for the lower estimate was that the studio expected the movie to do about $39.4 million on Sunday but in actuality it received $43.6 million, again beating Spider-Man 3's previous record of $39.9 million for the day.

The film earned a record-breaking $67.8 million on Friday alone. Of that, $18.5 million came from midnight shows, besting the previous midnight record set by Fox's 2005 Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, which grossed $16.9 million from 3,663 theaters.

It also set the record for an IMAX opener, earning $6.2 million from 94 IMAX theaters.

The studio estimates that The Dark Knight, which opened in a record 4,366 theaters, could gross as much as $220 million in its first week. That's more than the entire domestic gross of Nolan's Batman Begins, which earned $205 million domestically and $166 million overseas.

The big opening allowed the box office to take in a record $250 million in ticket sales total. The previous weekend record was $218.4 million, set in July 2007 when Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest opened to $135.6 million.

The Dark Knight Sets New Midnight Record!

The Dark Knight Sets New Midnight Record!

Source: Warner Bros. Pictures
July 18, 2008

Just past the stroke of midnight, Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight broke the record for a 12:01 a.m. film opening, earning an unprecedented $18,489,000 at the box office, it was announced today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. That total does not include the grosses from the subsequent 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. showings.

The 12:01 a.m. grosses soared past the previous record of $16.9 million, which had been held by Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith since May of 2005. The Dark Knight also surpassed Warner Bros. Pictures' own studio record for midnight showings, previously held by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

In making the announcement, Fellman stated, "We have been thrilled by the response to 'The Dark Knight,' first from the critics and now from audiences. From our earliest screenings, the buzz on the film has been white hot and it hasn't let up. Now that the opening weekend is here, we are very excited to finally share 'The Dark Knight' with moviegoers nationwide."

Race to Witch Mountain Set Visit: Part I

Race to Witch Mountain Set Visit: Part I

Source: Steve Chupnick
July 16, 2008

It was just about a year ago, in July of 2007, when I sat in Andy Fickman's office at Disney Studios; he was wrapping up the editing on The Game Plan. That's when I noticed a loose script for a movie called, Race to Witch Mountain. There was also a DVD of the 1975 flick, Escape to Witch Mountain.

I kind of put two and two together, and asked Andy what that was all about. He quietly said that was going to be his next film to direct, but he couldn't talk about it because he just signed the deal the night before. However, he did talk about wanting to be a part of this film and the original film is one of his favorites.

His version, though, is going to blow that one away, and if Andy's energy and enthusiasm indicates anything, we can only expect nothing but craziness. Skip ahead to April of this year; ComingSoon.net was on the set in Pamona, California. The cast and crew was all ready to go on what is set to be one giant of a flick.

Race to Witch Mountain follows two kids, AnnaSophia Robb and Alexander Ludwig in their adventure to save the world and their planet – with the help of their handy cab driver, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, whom they pick up in Las Vegas.

The Pamona Convention Center was transformed into the UFO Space Expo 9. In the scene, Dwayne is in search of the kids, who have escaped his sight and wondered through the convention floor. Tons of extras dressed as aliens lined the floor, along with expo attendees – some possibly so weird, they may have brought their own costumes to the set.

Andy and producer Andrew Gunn were extremely excited to have us on set, ComingSoon.net being one of the first media outlets to be allowed to see any filming. They introduced us to their visual masterpiece that was Expo 9.

Being that Andy is such a big fan of the franchise, he was very keen on keeping some things the same. "There are tons of tie-ins to the original film, some of which just makes us smile," he said joking with Gunn. "I can't wait for the DVD to tell people about this. No one's going to be able to get this when they see the movie, but boy are they going to enjoy the hell out of that DVD!"

But he wanted to point out the very different tone of this flick. "We are a darker movie; Disney has given us the chance to make this kind of movie – it really shouldn't have the Disney name on it. They've been really supportive with everything. I looked at what they did in '75 and loved it and respected it, and here we wanted to make it more intense. Oren Aviv and the guys kept saying, 'how far can you take it' and make it darker."

What also sets Race to Witch Mountain apart from a lot of the other films out there is how the story will be told. Andrew Gunn was quick to say it's not going to be like the TV show, "Roswell." "We're going to tell this story from a different point of view; the tone completely shifted from a Disney comedy to a "Die Hard" or a "Bourne" version of the movie."

As for the cast, Dwayne and Andy are reuniting for "Witch Mountain." "I had such a good time working with Rock; he's truly one of the great guys. He and his fans have been wanting him to do that action movie – even before 'Game Plan' came out. He's so good at comedy, and he said he didn't want to do another action movie until he found a movie that gave him a little bit of everything. And as we started developing this material, it's The Rock kicking ass. And all of a sudden, The Rock is back in action movies."

The rest of the cast includes Carla Gugino, Garry Marshall (who has his own book), Ciaran Hinds (as the bad guy), Cheech Marin, and Chris Marquette. Sci-fi guy Whitley Strieber has a small cameo and has his own 'booth' at the convention. Also, host of "UFO Hunters," Bill Burns, makes his presence felt as what else, a UFO expert.

The convention looked amazing; booths you would see at a real sci-fi convention: stages, contests, "Star Wars" Stormtroopers, Mars exhibits (one like 'an Easter Island meets Ganja look,' as Andy described), and a UFO karaoke machine with real songs. "Our production department took it very seriously with all the source material we had. We have a couple hundred extras, and they really fill the room. It's partly our imagination and real things."

The other set pieces – a huge upgrade with technology. "The original movie, you'll remember there was a hill and a tree, and they hid the UFO behind the tree." Andy added, "Here, our Witch Mountain is like Area 51. We got to have an entire day tour of NORAD. They let us take a ton of pictures, and we did a design with that. When you see the interior of our Witch Mountain, you'll notice we're trying to keep it extremely real. Once you start seeing the footage, you'll realize it's much more of a kick-ass ride they're used to – like the 1970's action movies, just people kicking the crap out of each other."

You could tell Andy was having fun on this shoot – a man dressed in a green reptile outfit giving him hugs and kisses is just the beginning. Andy was carrying a mini dominatrix whip with him and lightly hitting the Assistant Director and his other crew members with it. Yeah, this is one outrageous director.

As for Dwayne Johnson, we had a chance to chat with him about working with Andy again on this flick. "It was great; I had a great time with Andy. He understands my comedic sensibilities, but he knew I wanted this to be badass, and a movie audience wouldn't expect it. It really pushes the boundaries. I really wanted the action to hold up."

And it definitely was the action that got him excited about the script. "You remember the original?" he asked. "The action is amped up, plus for me coming back to the action genre – I would only do it if it was intense. The action is really driven and kicks. Plus it's funny, too. The story is thrown right at you. These two kids hop in my cab, and they just happen to be from another planet – and the fate of their planet is in their hands."

It's the looks of the aliens and creatures that really impressed Rock. "The Siphon is one of the greatest monsters in the movie. Through a series of events, he realizes it's all true, and it's just a coincidence I am chosen to help them."

One thing that's new for Dwayne is the car chase scene. "A lot of what I've done is hand-to-hand combat. For me, this was awesome to do the driving. We were in the go-mobile, and the cameras are never cutting away. The big kid in me, we're having these incredible car chases going 60 miles an hour; we got airborne a couple times, too. I got out of the car and was like, 'that was f**king awesome!' I'm doing all my own stunts. I'm happy to be back with that. Everyone wants to push the envelope, they know what it is to hand out an old fashioned ass kicking – and that's where that '70s style comes into play."

The kids in the film, Alexander and AnnaSophia, have most of their scenes with Dwayne's character. He says he's been very impressed with how they work. "Yeah, they're great. They always have a fresh perspective, and especially in this movie; you're always on the road. First three minutes, boom, you're in the race, we're on the run."

With sequels all the rage now in Hollywood, it was only fitting that we ask Rock if he'd want to come back and do a second movie. "Sure, I'd love that; but it really depends on how well it does. I'd love that," he said.

What made being on the set even more fun – I got to be in one of the scenes. And, if you look closely when you see Race to Witch Mountain, you'll catch The Rock pushing me out of the way as he's looking for the kids. I even got a free t-shirt out of it, which made the day all the more better.

You can check out more from the set later on this summer. Race to Witch Mountain is scheduled to hit theaters March 13, 2009.
